Another lead-off, this time a custom made Inspection locomotive, I got this at the Shenendoah Train show a couple weekends ago, just getting to the picture taking now. One guy, also named Jerry, does some wonderful customs and detailed locomotives, I bought about 6 from him. Hard to decide which to post first! I think this one is a very unusual model, and liking that, it's going first tonight. Also in a roadname I like, too. Built on a modern Walthers Trainline diesel chassis, I should be able to DCC this one with no problems.

This one's for EM-1.
A Rivarossi President Fillmore... $45 at the Allentown show. Needed some gearbox repairs, as it turned out, but it runs smooth now. Will be getting extra pickup and LED lighting.

Nelson, NOW you got MY full ATTENTION! That's one, I don't have! I'd love to get the other one from the days of the Mantua "Collectables" which I gthink was President Adams, as I have the President Washington.....As to add to it, my collection is based on "2" of everything, and I do not have 2 B&O Green Pacific's, and to that extent, I have one of the all blue Pacific's, that I'm building, myself, that's also a Mantua model, but not the "Collectable" versions........

Opps ! I forgot to post a loco of the week, in Loco of the week. This week I'll post a pair of Athearn Alco PAs. Greenbay Western Railway. Recently acquired from Railspec. Not seen to much around New York City. I don't think they are a stock Athearn paint scheme. They are of a first run type with metal side frames and a old style open truck frame. Only the bottom is covered. The drive has the black motor and NO flywheels. They run very well. edit; added a photo showing the drives. frank

My LOTW is a recently purchased Mantua 0-4-0 brass/diecast Goat Switcher painted for Central New Jersey Lines / CNJ
It has full valve gear added which is the only reason why I purchased it... well and it was painted pretty neat...

Yes Ben, At ~$90, this one was a lot more than I wanted to spend, but the valve gear addition and the fact that it is ready to display as is made it worth it to me. I was wondering about the paint scheme myself. I could not find any documentation that the CNJ RR even had these goats, let alone whether they were painted this way.

sean. The CNJ had some 0-4-0s. A side tanker #840 worked the Jersey city roundhouse area. I have seen head end photos of a 0-4-0 saddle tanker somewhere along the shore route. It was said in the photo description to be a CNJ engine. frank

Hi Frank,
Thanks... Yes, I know of the side tank 0-4-0t. It is the one the Busy B is modeled after I believe. I just could find no evidence of them actually having a 0-4-0 Goat camelback locomotive. I believe this to be an imaginary locomotive.

Sean you always end up buying the engines off ebay that I seem to love! I love that thing for its colors so if you're looking to sell that in the future I'll take a stab at it cause I can't get enough of the colors

* Sean they, the CNJ, didn't have 0-4-0 camelbacks. They had no place where the track gauge needed a 0-4-0 type. The mantua is a model of a Reading engine. The CNJ had alot of 0-6-0 camelbacks. frank

Hi Frank, Yes, I thought that the CNJ did not have the 0-4-0 camelbacks. I looked for and found their rosters for steam and it did not indicate they had any. I have a picture from an actual goat that I took when I was out at the RR museum and train ride, out east of me.. Stroudsburg RR I believe...

Here is my Big Boy, a Bachmann Pennslyvania 2-10-4 with smoke and chug chug sound. This is new but when it came out the box it was lubed and now the lube has soaked btween the plastic pieces that hold each of the wheeles together. When I run it on the track once andthe wheeles on one side come apart at the plastic piece. Does anyon know of a place I could send it so it can be fixed? What is going to have to happen is the plastic pieces between the wheeles are going to have to be remover and soaked in de-greaser or degrerased and glued so both halves of the wheels are correctly put together.

GG-1 Guy, The early 2-10-4's were sidewinder motors. They were poor performers when new. The motor is really too small and gets hot. The plastic inserts between the drive axles are very prone to failure. Bachmann once stocked new driver sets, but has discontinued these parts. Many of these 2-10-4's and their production brothers the early 4-8-4's are damaged by the use of non plastic compatible lubricants. I have dealt with the early 4-8-4's and found that the result was not worth the effort.
The latter production engines , 4-8-4's, with the inline motor are pretty good runners, but still have a driver insert problem. I have repaired these, with JB-Weld, with some success. I have no experience with the current 4-8-4 and 2-10-4 production engines
You may contact Bachmann for help, I'm not sure how they handle second hand engines. I will provide some links for the similar 4-8-4 engines.

I thought I would, John. She's a beaut (love that satin finish) and a smooth performer with definite flywheel action now, but I was sure cursing late Rivarossi design the night I was working on her. The mounts on the rotten plastic gearbox were broken front and rear where it screws to the frame, so I had to piece the fragments together and Zap CA them. It sticks to that plastic very well -- better than epoxy -- so the repairs seem at least as strong as the the original casting. Fortunately she hadn't succumbed to the dreaded sheared gear pin disease that so many of these Pacifics suffered from, even though the grease inside had turned to bathroom caulk. I could barely scrape it out with a screwdriver. Getting the fairly brittle gearbox / motor cradle halves apart involved some tense moments, but I got all the parts thoroughly stripped in alcohol and re-greased with Super Lube. I'm sure she runs better now than when new.

Current Bachmann 4-8-4 engines are smooth runners and great pullers. I have 3 of them. I always wonder how they could run with the old pancake motor. - Erich
