Well, I had a time trying to decide whether to put THIS in COTW or LOTW...but since it IS Motor-vated, I guess LOTW it is. I picked this up last month at the Shenendoah VA train show, guy did awesome custom work, I will definitely be attempting to DCC this critter for use at shows! I actually haven't tried to run it yet, but it does have a motor, a round pancake type, possibly Atlas or Lima? . I'm calling it a ChooBoose.

This is my LOTW:
I think this is a modified early Mantua pre-WWII brass Atlantic. I'll know better when it is delivered. Either way, it was a steal @ ~$39!

I wanted to make a bid on it, just wasn't sure to what it could be and what it would take to make run once more! I guess Penn Line.

*sigh* I found this at my LHS for $3.99. I didn't realize they had just thrown it in the bag before I left, so when I got home the shell was cracked in three and many of the radiator louvers up front are broken. It's got the nicer Athearn motor in it, so there's still hope for it.

Hi Microbusss,
Lol! Basement cam. That RI engine is sweet! I just found my first Tyco RI engine a few months back.
Thanks for sharing.

Justin, I laid my pre-WWII atlantic on it's side and compared the undersides of the two locomotives side-by-side before I bid. If this chassis does not have Mantua origins, I dont know what does. All the screw holes matched up from the lead driver back to the trailing truck. The gear looks to be the same thick gear that is on the Mantua as well. Penn lines either have a diecast chassis & bottom plate or a sheet brass bottom plate with a brass chassis. The back of the brass chassis, where the motor mounts, however is not made from the web of the C-channel, but rather the flanges. I have early Mantua chassis where this portion is made from both the flanges & webs. I seem to believe the early pre-war chassis kits were mainly the web-type motor mounts... Like this one for example:

The chassis on the top is of a consolidation and the chassis on the bottom is of a pre-WWII atlantic. Notice how similar the two atlantic chassis are?
Either way, I thought it was unique enough to warrant the bid.

I got this today. A winton, 2-6-6-6. just what you can see. No tender, no front pilot, no main rods, no valve gear, damaged cab, boiler can't fasten to drive, who knows what else. I would say there are many surprise's to come. Still for this engine a lot is done well. frank

How'd you happen upon that Winton Frank? Good score no matter how! Wish I could help you out with the parts. Last year I sold a rolling chassis and valve gear. Tender as well. I kept the box for mine:

my most recent finish. Varney little joe. Originated out of Sean's collection but was sent to my friend matt who sent it to me for restoration but before work started I helped him acquire a Rivarossi FEF and he in turn gave it to me in exchange for helping him. Needed a lot of cleaning, painting, frame work, and even some new and repaired steps! Worth it! Seybold Locomotive Works #7 is a much better engine then the beat up 98 that arrived here. She runs really nice with the clean wheels, repaired motor, and lubrication.
