Here's a picture of a 4 X 8 layout we did. It's DC with 7 blocks. We can run 4 trains with various switching operations between lines. We have 2 main lines - the outer loop and 2 possible inner loops - the oval inner loop or the horseshoe loop. Trains park when not running on either the horseshoe loop, the top end of the inner loop, or the 3rd segment in the top end. We planned it out using SCARM, a freeware track designer. It didn't quite work out as SCARM said it should and we had to make adjustments. When we tried to go back into SCRAM and do an "as built" drawing, it essentially said there is no way it would work like that as it showed track overlaying other track. The area with the "roads" is where we put a village for Christmas. All the buildings are lighted with a few extra street lights. There's quite a bit of wiring involved for the blocks and switches. For years we ran a double loop with a few variations - 2 train operations. This past year we thought we'd try something a little more elaborate as we added 2 trains to our fleet. I think it's quite a bit trainwise on a 4 X 8 layout.

Personal preference.....and not knowing what the scenery planned is...the two tracks in the foreground...I would close them up, like a double-tracked-main, then the first one branching up to the right side off the inner main...I'd bring that parallel with the other two, switching back in on the left of center.
Three track grade crossing, front and centre, with two mains, and a branch or switching line parallel.
You can move the rerailer/grade crossing on the second main down to the switch you move, and shift the outer main rerailer/grade crossing a bit left, and they'll all line up!
Just me.
