Ok guys, my next engine question is about a Mantua GP20 that I just purchased. It looks really clean and hardly used but its runs slow and squeals when running in forward. No squealing in reverse, but it runs even slower. When I touch the leads to the wheels as its upside down on the table, it seems to run better but sparks are coming out from the ends of the axel shafts. The rivets are still in place on the motor. Is there anything I can do without drilling them out. Does it just need to be lubed from being 45 yrs old or is it something else? I hope to get it running well as I just purchased a Dummy to go with it. I really wanted to stay "brown box" and PT, but I couldn't resist. Your advise worked last time so I'm hoping you guys come through for me again. Thanks. Pat

Needs lubrication something awful from the sounds of the problem! Then clean those wheels. Trust me, a MU-2 GP20 will run better once fine tuned than a Tyco PT. I have over 5 diesels with MU2's, only had to clean the wheels. I've bought several PT diesels and some and almost of all them needed more TLC to run.
" Heck with counting 'em rivets, TRAINS ARE FOR FUN! Not called the Mad Scientist for nothing either!"

I'm not too familiar with Mu's. Do I grease it through the holes in the bottom plate? Is that Life Like grease in the tune up kit ok to use? The wheels look clean, but I will clean them a little more.

The MU-2 is a reliable and dependable motor and will provide years of service. Remove the bottom plate (two screws or rivets). Check the 48 pitch worm gear train-if its white grease has hardened, clean it off and apply fresh grease. Put a single drop of light oil on each armature bearing, under the "dogbone" bearing strap. The armature on this is clearly visible-if it is dirty, clean it and the brushes with alcohol or electrical contact cleaner on a Q-tip. Check the brushes and holders-are they even on the armature? MOST IMPORANT-the top of the MU-2 (where the brush plate & springs attach) is magnetized and can attract lots of metal debris-I've seen staples, bits of wire, etc. Make sure there is nothing stuck to the top of the motor, and that the brush springs are intact. If your unit has traction tires, check and replace as required. It will be good for years of trouble free operation after you do this.
