I just got the Tyco Diesel Switcher locomotive (Santa Fe red/silver 241 version.) It runs fine but I think it might need some lubrication to ensure more smooth running (so it wouldn't sound too squeaky or something.) I do know how to disassemble the chassis...

But I don't know how to access the gears or whatever for oiling/lubing. I can clean the wheels with Life-Like track cleaner fluid and a Q-tip, like I clean most of my locomotives.

that LifeLike track cleaner will make the plastic brittle...

I use stick-style lip balm for cleaning and lube... at least 10 years, never had a problem since.
The petrol based balm also does not settle to the bottom as some liquid oils, nor does it spatter to other parts.

Use a toothpick to apply... a Q-tip is okay on the tread-part of the wheels, no place else because the small fibers will snag onto anything else... that collects more dust as time goes on... toothpick.

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Remove the bottom plate and remove any dried up old grease from the worm gears. Apply fresh white grease and one drop of light oil on the armature bearings. If the armature is dirty, clean it with alcohol on a Q-tip. One drop of light oil on the axle rolling points and you're all done.
