I'm considering getting a half table for a day at the Timonium Train Show to sell off my 60s era train stuff. What I'm wondering is if any of you can tell me how successful you have been at selling stuff at these shows. Was it worth the time? I'm looking primarily for input from those who are not "professional" sellers, but folks who go to a show to unload some of their stuff. That being said, I'll take advice and insights from "professionals" as well.

How fast do you want to sell?
$2-$3 per R-T-R freight car
$5-$7 kit built cars
$10-$15 R-T-R cheaper locomotives
$15-$30 add details locomotives
$5-$10 grab-bag cheaper snap-track
$10-$15 grab-bag Atlas and better track
$15-$20 grab-bag freight/passenger cars
This may or may-not work, but I just came for a model train show... the trains were flying off the tables... and that isn't the ones that were actually rolling on track!
Good luck! You will get some (idiots) who will try to make you lose money. No one looks happy.
You will get some who will be happy with what you posted for prices... those are the ones that will smile and keep coming back.
Again, may Good Luck be with you!
Happy dealership!
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Microbusss
There might be confusion about what I meant by 60s era - that is when they were bought when I was a kid. It does not reflect the era of the equipment.

If you want to sell 60s era collectible trains at a show, other than the super desirable stuff, you'll have to dump it for next to nothing to sell it off that way - and most of it will go to people who have no idea, nor do they care really, what they've just bought.
So if you want to just dump the trains, send me a list and a lot price, pack it up in a box and ship it here. Then you can go walk around the show and enjoy it instead.
The reason it doesn't sell as well is the majority of train show buyers are either more serious modelers looking for more accurate equipment and DCC locomotives, or kids just starting out who will buy most anything.
I'll give you an example - I've had two of the 1959 Tyco Model Railroader 35th anniversary box car this year. I bought one at a show for $5. The other, I've carried in my own show inventory, and put it out at every show, for at least two years, asking $20.
The $5 one, I put on eBay and sold for $25. The one I carry? I finally pulled it out to go on eBay too. I saw one at a Greenberg show Saturday in the original box for $20 and it didn't sell.
And I just got another batch of 1958-1962 era Athearn and Varney stuff - I was buying original unbuilt kits for like 6 for $10 from the guy because he didn't want to take it home at the end of the day.
If Timonium is different than what I see here in New York, I'd like to know, if I could sell this stuff and get average prices for it then I'd consider making the trip.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. It seems I might better be served by selling my stuff on ebay. I might take my commons and drop them off at the White Elephant table they have at the Timonium show. You drop it off, they take 15% of what sells.
As for stuff I'm selling - I posted back in mid February on the trading post forum a topic "60s era trains for sale". I priced the stuff based on sale prices I saw on ebay disounting the outlier prices and based on some input from some on this forum. Didn't get any takers. There's one picture of a bunch of common cars and then I have other pictures of things that have some value. I have a few other things I didn't post like a Burlington and a Reading GP13; and an Athearn B & O rubber band powered RDC car, and a Penn Line B & O platform observation coach that I didn't post.

| If those "GP13"s are actually GP30s, I would be interested.

I've seen them called GP13 or GP20, Don't thinkI've ever seen them referred to as GP30. Looking at pictures I'm pretty sure they are GP20s - one fan on the back, one fan behind the cab.
