If you all have been following me and my C-630 trials and errors you'll know I finally got my hands on a basketcase Ph I a few weeks ago. So far here's my issues and solutions to a few
of the problems...

Universal joints: On the first test run I discovered all the universals were cracked due to age, fortunately the parts bin had suitable replacements, they are the Athearn universals, but I have a bowser(?) universal kit that will be going in instead.

Motor: ok no matter what I tried the Rivarossi 3 pole is RIP so suggestions on a cheap "drop in" 5 pole would be appreciated, I'd rather not do a whole lot of work installing a motor if I can avoid it!

Wheels: wheels are in great shape, BUT they are the deep flange ones. so they run like crap on my ballasted track, thought my Athearn wheels would work (they dropped right in) Unfortunately the Athearn has a straight gear whilst the Riv is beveled. A wheel swap didn't work either as the axle hole diameter is bigger on the Athearn wheels. Query, is there a NWSL replacement?

so far the body is in awesome shape, no cracks or missing broken steps, when all is said and done this beast will be an ex NW unit for a friends railroad...which will have been retired and put on operational display in my train museum section of my layout

just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

Don't believe NWSL has wheel sets for this diesel. I say get some new u-joints from NWSL and find a nice can motor for it.

A typical flat can is difficult to squeeze into one of these because of where the gearbox is, which tends to restrict it to a cab mounted pancake type like the original. A disk drive motor will work, but may not hold up under a lot of use.

The tank drive in these is a cheaper version of the drive in Rivarossi's U25C. I repowered one with a small can and pulleys, and the shortest drive belt I've ever come across salvaged from some old electronics.

A thin O-ring might do the trick as well.

Ray, it just occurred to me from pictures I've seen that the input to the gearbox on the 630 is much higher than the U25C. That makes remotoring a lot easier.

I recommend these Nichibo motors. http://www.ebay.com/itm/281081614453

They are slower and quieter than the Mabuchi FK-130 I used, Which has been my go-to motor for many repowers. They have the same dimensions and should fit inside the hood easily.

As for wheels, I would check the NWSL catalog for any that will fit those axles. (1/8", right?) Otherwise I'd remove a wheel at a time, chuck the axle in a drill, and file them down to RP25 contour.

I bet I got those belts! They're used in CDROM's as a ejector drive.
