I've been kept busy these last few months. During that time i have acquired 2 tyco 4-8-0's and a Mantua yardgoat 0-4-0. After acquiring these engines, i've had no inclination to bother looking for more motive power. Well, anyway, I also had a Mantua Camelback boiler and tender sitting around, saving them for a 2-10-0 camel. I got fed up with looking for a 2-10-0 chassis and/or trying to making one. All of which led to me getting the 4-8-0's.
Construction is going well so far. Boiler being partly mounted to the chassis, new drawbar made, motor running as best as I can get it to, a set of tyco 0-8-0 cylinders cut to be angled inwards and to raise the boiler up. And now it is the long wait for parts. For weight, i'll be using heavy 3/4" nuts, stuffing the boiler with them. I'll be experimenting with nutserts for the front part of the engine to mount it since I have rear taking care of. If that plan fails, I can always stuff the steam chest full of epoxy putty and the drill afterwards to give the screw that holds the pilot truck something to bite into and hold. Will be adding pictures soon.

* 4-8-0 camelbacks, a good locomotive to model. The spacing of the axels on the Mantua 4-8-0 matches the CNJ K1 class 4-8-0 camelback. Do you have a prototype you are modeling. A particular railroad, or just making it for a home road. * Also varney cylinders as on a casey jones angle in more. Brooks built most of the 4-8-0 camelbacks that were made. Brooks also made the sharply angled in cylinders for inside valve gear use. Only main rods and side rods on the outside. You couldn't see the valve gear. Most of these 1895 + or - era locos when rebuilt had regular cylinders added. Sometimes it is easier to make a rebuilt model than a as built one. * Do you have any drawings of a 4-8-0c ? frank

I'm just modeling for a home railroad, Lehigh and Great Lakes. I wish I had a set of varney cylinders, would've save a lot of cutting. And unfortunately, I have no drawings of a CNJ K1, i'm just using my eyes and what looks to be about right. I got some 3/4" nuts and they aren't as heavy as I thought they'd be. Only .7 of an ounce.

My dad is an Oldsmobile guy and we have a couple V8's in the works. A 455, a 425, and a 318. I might be wrong about the 425 though, but they are all Olds.

I've been busy with this engine and giving up on finding a Rivarossi 844 boiler front.

The Rivarossi 4-8-4 FEF is or well seems to be the more difficult steamer by Rivarossi to find parts for! But, that boiler front you got there, looks VERY familiar!

Great picture, Ken. Interesting to see the tapered connecting rods. I wonder what the large blocks are on either side of the front coupler... for shoving duties, perhaps?

Ken ; The Lackawanna mastodon is almost the twin to the CNJ K1. You can easily see it is a Brooks built loco. Slanted cylinders with the inside Joy valve gear. The standard cab, and tender. The tender is the same shape as on the real Casey Jones loco. Tho I think larger. Rivarossi made their model with this tender. frank
Here aare the Brooks specks for the CNJ K1

I have just ordered my parts, boiler front and headlight. I might as well start making that other 4-8-0 into a Great Northern engine , I have a weakness for Great Northern. AND, it would be easier than the camelback.

Mike, Nice work! I'd love to find a set of the Camelback parts to add to a 2-8-0 to make into a B&O E-19a! I got the complete loco, but the Camelback parts are evading me!

The motor isn't as good as I want it to be. I finally got the boiler mounted in place, weight added (and there's tons of space for more), and ready for details and painting. Anyone know of where I can get some can motors?

Got motors coming in and more parts. I'm also looking around for more weight, the engine is too light, needs to be heavier. The engine was running smoother when I had my hand on it, so I need at least a half pound more of weight. With the smaller can motor inside the engine, I can stuff more weight.

Annnnd. As for the other 4-8-0, I 'm thinking of butchering a Rivarossi Casey Jones boiler and making it into a GN 4-8-0. I got some parts gathered for it as well.

New Motor Installed
Other side And now, where do i solder the other wire to? Directly to the frame i suppose but it isn't quite often I do this and the last time i did it I forgot which engine I did it to.

You can't solder to zamac. Use an existing screw or drill and tap a hole in the frame for a 2-56 screw to fasten a lug to the frame.

Come to think of it, you could drill & tap the screw hole in the rear of the motor mount so it's inconspicuous. There would be no need to unscrew the lead from the frame when removing the motor. I think some of Yardbird Trains motors were set up that way.
It will be nice to see it complete.

I need at least one Cylinder set from a Mantua 2-6-0 or a 4-6-0......and someone posted a picture with 2 of them in it! GRRRRRR
Anyone have a steam chest from either one of these 2 Mantua steamers to part with ? I want to add slide valve to the front set of cylinders, to a Mantua 2-6-6-2, to make it a 0-6-6-0 that was a B&O prototype, known as "Old Maude".....and to date that's the only detail holding me back, from getting started on that model!

I'm glad I went back and read a little more closely! I have 6 or 7 Varney Casey Jones cylinders! I'd trade a set of them, for a set of Mantua 2-6-0 or 4-6-0 cylinders......PM me if interested!

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to do any work on my locomotives due to my brother hogging up the entire stinkin table with his large scratch built shinto temple. It's nice, but frustrating since I have just about enough parts to finish off the 2-6-6-0 (got my angle mounted bell) and the 4-8-0.

8BA. Merc crank, 255 base, bored 120 over, ported and relieved, stainless valves, 3-ring pistons, Offy heads and 4BBL inlet manifold. Mallory distributor. That is going back into my 1949 Willys Wagon Street Rod when the quarters get finished. Always a 2WD, now with Ford 8" and Mustang II front end.
This is what it used to look like. We have a T-Bird tilt column, not sure anymore what seats are in it or what we're going to use.
This is the inlet manifold. Been on this car for.........almost 30 years. 390CFM Holley.
This is my oldest...owned the 50 Tudor now over 43 years. Merc cranked flathead.

Amazing how trains, planes, and automobiles all come together somehow someway. I got my weights in, all progress has come to a screeching halt due to a 1/12th scale shinto temple DX dangit! I'm not the one building it btw. My brother is.
