I'm experimenting with what I have for gears and motor. I have 8 of the motors found in the last Mantua Classic DCC ready 0-6-0T. I have the original worm gear which is 1/4" dia. by 10 MM long with 6 teeth. Then, I have a Mehano worm gear that's 6 MM dia. by 5/8" long with 4 teeth. This remotor will happen to a Mantua 0-4-0 with a weak old motor. I have seen then remotored a Mantua 0-4-0T with the motor from said 0-6-0T. Pulling power doubled and slower and quieter running. Is the stock worm or the Mehano worm gonna do best or is there a better worm gear? I looked at NWSL's worm gear chart and YIKES! Its spanish to me.

So you're talking about can motors, right? The stock worm should be fine. I don't think any Mehano worm has the right pitch to mate with the Mantua axle gear. If it's from the gear tower of one of their dual-drive diesels, it's a twin-lead worm, which will make the loco run twice as fast. The Mantua - Tyco worms were single-lead, which means one continuous spiral tooth instead of two.

Thanks Nelson. Yes, using a can motor. I gotta get a shaft reducer and gonna get some brass sheet material from Lowe's and start soon.
