Hello, I just purchased an old Atlas (made in Austria) SD-24. Can someone tell me about these models? Are they any good ? What kind of drive train do they have? Thanks, Chris

If its yellow box, it runs as good as a Athearn b-b engine. Roco made these for Atlas in the 70's and 80's. All-wheel drive and pickup. I believe these are split-frame mechs. If its the much newer one, it's the best of the best and bullet proof!

Thanks, yes, I believe it's a yellow/white box, definitely not the newest of Atlas. If it runs as well as an old Athearn, I'll be pleased with that.

Roco Live Forever!
Motors originally built for ailerons in fighter planes.
Austria/Roco
Compared to Earlier Athearn's I have, they are quite fine running locomotives.
Just wondering, Atlas never made steam locomotives... but Austria Roco did.
Enjoy your Atlas Roco!
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Made by Roco for Atlas. Not a split frame. Will run decent, they were considered top line engines when new despite the incorrectly shaped fuel tank.
Biggest problems on these are the insulated side drive wheels can come loose, and the trucks snap in place with two long plastic pins on the gear tower - they are easily broken with age. The engine will still run broken, but if you pick it up the truck falls out. I've repaired a few using other parts engines over the years.
The frame was also used under the SD35, the shells are interchangable.
Other engines in this series included a GP38, originally with high short hood, and GP40; motors and gears interchange. And for a time the Atlas turnrable used the same motor in it's drive.
