I couldn't find where I posted this before. I was asked to paint a C430 like this and started looking through the pictures. I cleaned up and old MU2 C430 shell and primered it over the original SF paint. I airbrushed the shell with Badger CR blue water soluable paint and then added the decals. I think you might be able to get the paint mixed at Napa and put in a rattle can. I hope this helps and thanks for the offer. :)

I asked mainly because I simply don't have the time for such projects.

In that last picture of the shell next to the pic of the real unit, on the roof behind the cab, what's that box structure? Dynamic brake grid? I wonder why the box on the Tyco shell looks like it stands up a tad higher than on the prototype?

The more I look at the prototype picture, is that the dynamic brakes above the Conrail can opener logo? Maybe the box behind the cab is air intake, and the side parts of that box are filters or grids? Is this Conrail unit riding on Alco's Hi-Ad trucks? I wonder how Tyco settles on the then-new Alco Century line, and to model the C-430 and C-636 out of all the prototypes that could've been modeled?

| Tyco did that C430 before Alco went out of business, I don't think anyone knew how few were going to be sold. A few of them had the regular drop-equalized trucks, the pair sold to the Reading anyhow. The vents on top middle of the hood are related to the dynamics, I believe, but you might google up and see if there are any specific articles on these or on the Century series in general for more information.

I doctored up the picture to illustrate some parts. I am not 100% sure on the air filter and intercooler. fairly certain, though.

My guess: The C430 was new in the mid-sixties, boasted being a powerful road switcher. That had a certain appeal. Athearn was already producing F7 and GP7 locos. Kind of tough to get in that market. Don't really have an idea why they picked the C630 other than it was another ALCO and it was easier to get an agreement with ALCO to produce the model. I think Tony Cooks website says that the C630 was TYCO's most popular selling loco.
Another little tidbit, the 430 had such a short production run because a major component, I think it was the traction motors , were purchased from their competitor. So ALCO could never make any profit or undercut their selling price because of the purchase cost of the motors.

| I guess I never paid attention before, but WOW, the C430 fuel tank should look like something on the C630. That C430 really does look a lot better with a prototypical paint scheme though.

| Nice work as usual, AF. I never was much a fan of Conrail, but that scheme looks great on that loco. A lot better than PC at least...

Thanks for your comments. This was a quick project to be a what if Tyco had done one. A lot of people don't care for CR. I was a teen when PRR failed and CR was a way of life in PA so I guess I got used to it even though I prefered Pennsy and still do. My Great Grandfather was an engineer for the PRR.
Tony, Visited your site and looked at the decals and other items. Nice!
