Hi y'all, I had an idea yesterday and I was wondering what anyone thought of it.
I'm somewhat strange - I'm both a serious model railroader who's looking to be as prototypical as I can, but at the same time I appreciate the classics like old mantua, varney, and some AHM and tyco and such freight cars. I'm also on a budget and usually but everything used and broken. I'm also in high school, which doesn't really leave a lot of time to do the modeling I have in store. All this means that I've accumulated an entire room full of old rolling stock, at least half athearn blue box, all of it waiting to be fixed, repaired, modified or full-on restored. I usually have the time to get a car finished in a couple of evenings after bedtime (yes, virginia, in this house they still enforce bedtime around 11). I figured it might be cool to share some of these projects, so I thought that even though there's a car of the week forum, I'd like to start my own "freight car project of the week" - that is, once a week, I'll pluck a random mystery box out of the heap, then do whatever work is needed, take pictures, and post the story on here. There's anything in those boxes - it could be as mundane as rehabilitating a worn-out athearn car to a full kitbash-painting-lettering deal.
What do y'all think? This week is an old mantua 40' gondola from the sixties. Since I run kadees+metal wheels, and I want this gondola in my regular fleet, it needs heavy running gear modifications as well as some cosmetic restoration. Almost done! Pictures not here yet :P

Sounds like a plan to me.
By the way, when I was in high school, it was 10:00 p.m. for me.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

I know the feeling . High school wasn't long ago for me so I get the whole time and money problem. College doesn't make it much easier, although at least I have a job now! I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got

* Ahhhh, a fresh idea. You should go through them first and find out which have hope of being repaired and which will be parts for others. This is like triage which is away to estimate, and grade, which can be saved, and which are hopeless. Remember, if this plan B is no good, go back to your plan A. frank

There's several guys on here who post their projects and progress intermittently. I don't see any reason you can't post your own topic weekly. Either people will view it, and comment, or they won't if it's not interesting. Either way, I'd say do it!

Well, I guess it's a go then. And they all have hope of getting a new life, it's just a matter of how impossible that will be. There's a caboose in a box that's only there because I lost the truck screws, then there's a scratchbuilt covered hopper somewhere with a bunch of styrene odds and ends with which I have to scratch-re-build it all over again. Next victim is probably an athearn NYC autoloader in for restoration, THEN it will be random after that.

Threads about a project from start to finish are interesting to me. I have learned some new techniques and get inspiration from seeing how others work on their projects.

I know that "SCVR66" is providing his skills and expertise on his layout and descriptive experiences of Roundhouse/MDC locomotive kits, he posts his progress here and on YouTube.
Give your efforts and ideas a go. It will be only helpful to the observers.

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?
