There is a system made by MRC that allows DC locomotives to run sound decoders. The issue I see with the system is tat it cost almost as much as a regular DCC system.
I run a DC layout and do have sounds. Two of my transformers are MRC sound and Power units. These output a synchronized sound to a speaker you can place in the layout. They also have horn and whistle sounds in them. MRC made a TECH II sound machine addo on unit that can be added to any transformer and provide the same sounds as the 7000.

MRC is terrible! All the new modern DCC sound decoders will work. Just have to get a sound controller so ya can do other sounds other than engine sounds.
