I have at times managed to buy two, three or more complete engines for that price!

To be flat out honest, this is why I sell parts on eBay. People are willing to pay for them. Don't shoot the messenger here, but so long as you have people willing to pay for them, you will have people willing to sell them. Funny thing is, when I started selling ~7-8 years ago, there were not that many people on eBay selling the parts like I was. I found out in a hurry that it was not worth spending 2-3 hours servicing a Mantua Pacific, cleaning it, painting it and decaling it, just to have it sell for ~$36-$40.. not to mention the time writing the description and setting up the listing.

I found that if I listed just the trucks individually with the screws, the chassis, drivers & valve gear by itself, the tender, the pilot (if not broken) and the cab (if not broken s well) I could clear anywhere between $60 and $90+ or more for a single good engine and spend only ~1/2 hour, testing, tearing it down and then cleaning all the parts. The listing was easy too. After I set up the first, it was just the matter of changing the photos and a few words in the description and title. Therefore I spend ~1/2 the time and get double or more the return.

Every once in a while, someone comes along that is willing to pay that little (or a lot) extra. It is rare, but nice when it happens. It has been my experience that it happens more often this time of year.

There are always guys out there that want just the one part. They do not want to deal with the rest of the scraped engine. I know this comes off as strange to the rest of us who have no problem dealing with the scrap. I tend to take it to the other extreme however... I have some 50+/- scrap Mantua Pacific & Mikado chassis alone in my parts bin and I do not hesitate adding another when given the chance to do so.

I bought a pilot, a cab and some screws and springs from yardbirds...all for under $25..
I paid $11 for the engine and $23 for parts...counting the postage I've got $40 bucks in a Mikado thats decent. and I got new parts instead of broken crappy ones..

That's intresting Sean! I have a friend who's giving me a whole box full of Mantua 4-6-2s and parts for them in exchange for repairing his engines! I have 1 full operable one and another with a broken pilot that i used for parts to keep the other one running. I expect to put at least 2 in action, the parts one and piece one together with all the parts.
