got the brushes out..should I clean them with alchohol...do they need to be flatened? They have a lil indention in them...springs are also mis-matched..so someone has been "in it" already..probably best I replace the springs and brushes eh?

They were probably held in by some dust or other crud. Don't flatten them... they have conformed to the commutator. A soak in alcohol or stronger solvent (lacquer thinner, Gumout, ect.) will remove any oil.

If the replacement spring(s) aren't of similar dimensions to the original (thicker, stiffer wire, for e.g.) then you should replace them. Only replace the brushes if they've worn down to short stubs.
