if any of you have seen the Athearn 40' flat with boat, you know those suckers don't sell cheap at auction. I was in my LHS yesterday, picking up my new Digitrax Super Chief system, and noticed the pack of boats hanging near the register. Hmmm, they SURE look familiar. So I bought the set of 4. Tonight, I brought them in the house, and found my Athearn box with the boat and flat kit, still unassembled. Pulled the boat out, and compared the size to the Lionel boats. Same. Started looking at the top and bottom, EXACT same details! So Lionel is either copying or has the rights to use these boats, the LHS owner said these are the exact same boats as were used by Lionel in the 60's on their flats, so they must have bought them from Athearn then. Even the cast anchor on the front prow is in the Lionel casting, too. $25 for a set of 4 boats, different colors. I've been wanting to build a boat consist, so now I have an easy way to do it. Here's the pics -

The part number on the Lionel package is 6-37834, called Boat 4 Pack. SKU # 23922 37834

Hi AMC_Gremlin_GT,
I have the two with the red and blue tops. They are very cool. The brown and black are different for sure.
Thanks for sharing.

the boat and airplane flats were originally designed by Athearn for Lionel during their one year partnership. Lionel likely retained production rights. Larry

Anybody ever see these in stores? I'd imagine shipping from Lionel would be expensive.

You can see that Lionel used them in their recent O guage catalog. It's O guage and it's and Evans auto loader with these boats.

That's where I got mine at, local hobby store, or I never would have known about them. This store carries G, O, S, HO, N gauges. I saw the boats hanging up, there were 4 packages. Shipping shouldn't be any more expensive than Ebay. You might want to check Amazon, they sell tons of stuff, might even carry Lionel stuff.
