take some fine steel wool and soak it in plain vinegar for a few minutes than remove it, spread it out and let it sit for 12 – 48 hours. All of the steel wool will turn into rust which easily crumbles into rust dust. This works well in desert scenes

That would certainly make realistic rust.
Keep it away from your tracks. The magnets in the motors will pick it up and soon the locomotives will come to a slow miserable halt.

you canscrape it off of anything metal thats been outside for while...autos, old coffe cans..etc...scrape it off onto a plate or some type of flat tray...then use it at will...and yes...keep it away from powered locomotives...
