here is the feed lot so far. Still debating on whether to add on a packing plant. The one for sale at the recycle shop has a foot print of 6.5 x17, way to large. There is a smaller Swift packer i could modify
If i expand my lay out Then the lot will be a staging point form where the cattle are taken to the big processing plant

Nice work, it looks great. How did you do the road on your layout in the background? I have tried card and plaster, none of which seemed to work well for me. I may try plaster again though.

Thanks everyone for the atta boys, can always use them Wish i had the rail road knowledge the forum members show
appreciate any input as to what else as far as buildings, scenery, etc could be added to the feed lot and surrounding areas
Maybe a bar, gas station hotel. If that cattle truck had a right hand door i wouldn't have had to build such a big turn around.
As far as scenery David Frary's book How to Build Realistic Model R R Scenery is my bible. I did do a search in our library system and found more useful books.
The asphalt road is made from 1/8th ? foam board. Sorry i am wintering in Ft Myers Fl so can't measure thickness. Cut it to scale road width I shim it with dry wall compound coming up to the crossings. I Glue on .220 wet sand paper being careful to butt the seams. You don't have to do any thing else unless you care to add character to the road like oil streaks or weathering. all that takes is a wash with diluted paint in random places.
The gravel road same base but i use finely screened chips and dust (found on any ball diamond) dusted onto the foam board that's sprayed with tacky cement or diluted Elmers. Can also find various colored jars of fine sand found at Hobby Lobby
If you don't care to use the .220 sand paper, go with the fine sand and follow up with a wash of black paint

VERY nicely done! I'll have to remember the sandpaper trick for road. I'll try that out and see how it looks.

| Jeez, that's amazing! I'm a professional artist (mostly building lamps) and I am seriously impressed with the set ups you guys create. I am getting sucked into the model RR world little by little. I want to build a table and install a RR now just to see if I can! Great job!

Find a copy of Art Curren's "Kitbashing HO Structures". He has many great ideas for creating a building that would fit.
One thing he does is to totally ignore what a kit says on the box. For instance, he built several nice factory buildings from Life Like Belvedere hotel kits. I always look for these when I go to the shows, they are great raw material for brick buildings of any kind.
You might be able to create a nice meat packing plant from a couple Belvedere kits. If you have access to photo copier, lay the kit parts flat and make several photocopies. Then you can cut and tape the photocopies until you find a good combination that fits the space you have. Then do the kitbash. I've done a few buildings this way and they are really rewarding.

| Fantastic stuff! Looks like you've got a keen knack for scenery... lots of interest in a small space. I love the crossover spur, and the puddlejumper at the dock. Stock pen looks pretty convincing for its size too. I can't wait to see more progress... keep it up!

Fred, THAT looks AWESOME! I've got a few parts to a stock pen that I plan to add to my layout just for the use of a few stock cars and such......BUT, I'll be doing the building and the pens, and the wife, is going to help with the added animals to it......HOWEVER, mine will be different in the way it will serve 2 levels, for the short cars with 2 levels within one car...."Pigs" and such smaller live stock.....
THEN, I plan to add a ramp on the other end from the dual level one for a single floor height car....
