I picked up an already-built Athearn BB Erie gondola with cannisters at my local quarterly flea market some time ago. Yeah- the one with the orange liquid cannisters. The load is as generic as a loaf of bread, so I picked up a Westinghouse 1959 logo online and made some decals to apply to those plain cannisters.

Why would such a load appear on a western Minnesota short line? Because, as an intermediary transfer line from manufacturing plants in the Twin Cities to western destinations, the Sioux Lake Line often gets things on their way more directly when needed- in this case, a load of whatever is in those cannisters from Westinghouse to North Dakota, where the USAF Grand Forks AFB/missile base (remember, it's the cold war era) is located.

I was originally going to repaint them white, but I'll save that for another load down the line.
(let's hope that there's no S.O.S. in them- chipped beef with gravy, or all those airmen will think they got cheated out of a steak dinner or two!).

As we used to say- GI beans and GI gravy, gee I'm glad I joined the Navy (but we got the SOS as well) !!!!

Ray,
Thats an interesting load to say the least, specially with the Westinghouse markings! I like it....

Question tho..... in those canisters, would that be dry goods, or semi-wet goods? As I can say I know Westinghouse got shipments of grease from time to time.... Grease for the stuff done at Westinghouse?

Interesting, none the less!

This plain load just begged for some improvement- making free decals on my printer with decal paper and clear gloss spray took less than an hour from start to finish.

Regarding grease, well SOS "could" be considered a form of grease- digestively, that is! .

Strangely, I actually liked the stuff as a young sailor.

By the way, this same concept is good for other plain loads- large boxes of wood, etc, that can get a bit of visual interest from a simple detail.

Nice work, Ron...

I actually liked most of what I got in the service, even had the general's personal mess sgt. when I was in NCO school. That man could cook up a mean stuffed chicken filet...

Ron,

Good job on those decals as this is a realistic looking load that matches the gondola's 1960s era.

Be creative, share and enjoy the hobby :-)

Remember that post I made about my AEC caboose, and then I suggested a consist for an AEC train? I think that those canisters would be the sort of "low level nuclear waste" or "heavy water/ liquid coolant" sort of load that I'd need for such a consist.

Is that a current production model? I'm not up to snuff on the modern athearn. I'd like to get canisters like that.

By the way, it looks good. That's a nice older style westinghouse logo, the likes of which I've only seen on the 50 year old spare parts boxes in power stations and on old cargo ships!
