I gotta go to radio shack and pick up a switch and I need a resistor assistance! I got a LED and need to know what resistor I need for it to work without burning up. Engine is set up for standard DC.

Here's a link to a reply about this. Basically don't go below 500 ohms in size.

http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/195570.aspx

Excerpted from above article for the click-impaired :

"Below are some numbers I came up while experimenting with LED's.
Measured with 12.2 VDC supply using 20 ma max current LED's. Values will vary some depending on actual DC supply voltage
Resistor Current
1000 ohm 9.0ma
750 ohm 12.45ma
680 ohm 13.12ma
510 ohm 16.25ma
I never go below 510 ohms.
There are Super bright LED's on the market and some go above 1000 ohms to cut down on the brightness.
Your mileage may vary."

Shaygetz's receipe for LED's is:

Resistor Radio shack 470 Ohm, 1/4 watt, 5% tolerance

LED's (from Ebay LED-switch.com) 2mm White Water Clear LED.

These are like flame throwers when one turns out the lights.

I have also had good luck with the 470 ohm resistors, both on 5mm and 3mm warm white LEDs. There are Chinese sources on EBay that will send you 100 sets of these for $3.00 or so, both flat head and round top 3mm ones and similar low prices for 100 sets of resistors.

I use 470 ohm resistors for every LED installation I do (except for DCC)......1/4 Watt, 5% tolerance.

Works and has yet to fail me in the 10 years or so I've been doing that electrical circuit!

EM-1 (Sorry I forgot your name :( ) if I were to send you an engine could you assist in equipping it with LEDs? what type of LEDs and/or resistors would you use if it were going to be a DC/DCC type engine used in both environments?

Jim,
Yes I can set it up for dual mode DCC/DC and use LEDs.....Costs about $15.00 to do plus return shipping.
