I have been converting my cars to metal wheels for most of this year and will not finish that project for quite some time. Instead of discarding the old wheels, I have been keeping them, hoping to do a wheel load for a flat car or gondola car.
The opportunity came up with the right gondola and I used "Doc Wayne's" images from the Model Railroader forum as inspiration. What I didn't realize was that he used the Tichy wheel load set (about $10.00), and not cast off wheels.
I made a carrying rack from H channel plastic beams and then tried to attach wheels- that's where my heartaches began. The acetal plastic of the wheels knows no adhesive it cannot defeat, but I found that "Amazing Goop", either the household or arts & crafts blend (clear) was the right thing. It does not bond the delrin/acetal plastic per se, but forms a strong non-pliable grip that works well.
I didn't grind down the points, because that would have made this a chore, not a project, and the entire load looks good enough for me. I painted the load in Rustoleum primer red after the glue set in, an then dull-coated it. I may return to this and air brush model master rust on it, but much later on, when I feel more confident about weathering techniques.
The load is removable, to enable change out with other loads being built.

That's so they don't roll off the flatcar. Must have a chain shortage on the GN. Throw'em in a gon and they're gone.

Ron, AGAIN, NICE WORK! Question, what size "H" channel did you use?
I made one for myself with a custom fitted flat car, but like the Gondola idea as well!
You ought to make another one, with new wheels.....and have a removable cover over them! Hmmmmmmm Interesting, thought I must say!

I remember in the 70s the local steel mill always had a gondola loaded with wheels. But I beLIEve that these were "junk wheels" that was going to be melted down. I used that idea on my layout back then using the yellow Tyco UP gondola with the rusty load of wheels....

John- the H channels are 3/16" x 24". I had them leftover from a structure build last summer and they looked like Doc Wayne's wheel rack that he showed on MR.
I might revisit a second project like this as I keep accumulating old wheels from my metal wheel conversions.
Did you mean Make a custom gondola cover, or use a covered gondola model?
I have the latter, but want to show them off. Maybe a second load on a flat car would increase visual interest more.

Walt- when I was up north two yrs ago, I saw plenty of rusty-looking wheels neatly arranged in two yards I went rail fanning at, and I am not sure if they were old stuff or spares for repair switch outs.

Ron, Thanks for the size of the "H" channel, I can buy that from Plastuct, or Evergreen Scale Models.....As I plan to add a few of these cars, to my fleet as well!
As for my "Covered Gondola" idea, add the wheel load, and make the roof or "Cover" removable! Add a short section of thin sheet metal in the bottom of the cover, and have a place to have a magnet that would pick it off the car, to show the load!
Simply put, looking at the current load, it looks AWESOME!
A little piece of knowledge, try using Walthers Goo, the next time to hold the wheels.......It doesn't stick, per se, but it will hold onto it kind of like hot glue would....."grabs" not adhere.

Nice job, Ron. Doc Wayne's work is always inspiring. He's one of my favorite modelers, and a nice guy to boot.
Nice photo, Ben. Thankfully those are too heavy for you to snitch.
