Just joined the forum, so a little about myself. I'm 43 years old. Trains and train sets have not really been a hobby of mine up until now, but I had several as a kid. And I really enjoy trying to locate old toys that I had as a kid. That's how I stumbled across this site. I was looking to see if I could find the Tyco Royal Blue train set out of the 1977 Sears Wish book that I received for Christmas. And lo and behold, a poster by the name of Brian scored one off ebay. So that prompted me to join.

I'm actually more into small model engine machining. I purchased a milling machine several months back and have been tinkering with machining model engines. That would probably be a nice skill to have if I decide to get into trains and train sets.

In general though, I'm a huge fan of tinkering with what my wife calls "toys", such things as RC cars, planes, slot car sets, and yes, now train sets. So I'm happy to be part of this forum.

Welcome aboard.

There are a few guys here with Unimats...you guys should start a new section just for machining/scratch machining.

I'll keep my eyes open for the '77 set, and message you if I find one.

Welcome to our forum! Brian has that set you want! He's shown it off. I suggest piecing it together. Small engine models huh? Like live steamers and scale gasoline engines?

Thanks theoldreliable, I would very much appreciate a heads up if you stumble across anyone that has that 1977 set for sale.

Redneck_justin, yes, small stuff like steam engines. I'm very new to the hobby, only been tinkering with it for about 5 or 6 months. So I'm very much in the learning stages, and at this point still trying to accumulate the necessary tools. I still hav to eventually get me a metal lathe. But I am enjoying it. I hope I can eventually get good enough to build one of the miniature aero v8 engines.

Welcome aboard! You'll find many fellow tinkerers here, myself included. Let us know when you find that Royal Blue train and do post a picture.

Thanks Redwoods. If any of you guys run across that set, please message me. I would be ecstatic if I could find one in mint condition.

Welcome to the forum from a fellow tinkerer. Machining those small engine parts sounds cool, and pretty ambitious.

Brian, I noticed the "Important Notice" in your set about the royal blue locomotive. Is your set some sort of special or limited edition set? I know the 1977 sears catalog shows a santa fe locomotive. I can't remember if my set had the sante fe or the royal blue, but I believe it was the sante fe.

I have a Royal Blue Locomotive and tender. The motor is in the tender and will not run at present. I'm currently trying to figure how to remotor. It has the old copper looking motor and it seems to be destroyed. I picked the unit up at a flea market many years back and would like to get it working. Can post pictures later. Any help wpuld be appreciated.

Welcome Mike;
I hope you enjoy this forum. Maybe you will find a new way to replace the tender drive in the Royal Blue. I find it easier to put a motor in loco. Lets see what you do.

Either a CD Rom motor or do what I've done and use a gear and motor from a Mantua 0-4-0. The CD Rom is going to be easier.
