In cleaning motor and wheels, I stripped the green paint off this Tyco steam engine (http://hoseeker.org/gallery/index.php?album=mantuatyco%2Ftycosteamengines&image=tyco233b460sf1890tenwheeler1970.jpg&z&p=full-image). Kills me that I got the engine running and ruined the paint! UGH! Any suggestions on best paints to use and strategies for repainting?

Depends on how you want it to look. Not glossy or semi-gloss appearance I would go with Floquil paints. Glossy appearance: I've only had success with Testor's enamel gloss paint, 1/4 .oz bottle.
Definitely, airbrush or rattle spray can.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Not sure what shade of green that is... I want to say I've only ever seen it on that engine, and it's kinda strange looking toward almost being ugly. Maybe someone else recognizes it, otherwise finding a match may be your hardest task.
Otherwise, if you dismantle the loco, you can simply repaint the boiler and not worry about an exact match to what's left... just get a close shade and make it consistent at least. As NC said above, spray is your only option. You can use acrylics too, BUT if you do so you will need to strip the rest of the paint, and then shoot the boiler (especially if it's metal) with a primer first.

It certainly is a weird shade of green. Not worried about an exact match; just looking to fix the damage. Getting that paint brand info is what I needed to know. Didn't want to paint the engine with wrong brand/type of paint only to have to strip it down again and repaint. Ahhh… the joys of being a novice. Thanks for the help!

Another thought on the green, is if you have a hobby shop nearby that has a selection of military colors, take the engine there and see what you can find. Some sort of camo / military green may be close enough to work with.

Army green! Thank you! Never would have thought of that. That idea on color certainly seem to be in right direction. AND rings true that it might have been used on multiple products to save on cost back in the day.

I second caboose1.......Wal-Mart carries a good rattle can shade of gree, in my area, I've seen the "Hunter Green" Along with "Kelly Green" by Wal-Mart's own "Color Place" brand of paint and is good paint, as the Hunter green is a REAL close match to "Christmas" green as the boiler looks to be factory.....

youre right John I think WalMart changes "shades" of "whatever" as long as they get it on the shelves... I have seen (and purchased) 2 diff shades of green...both are about the same...

You could if your wanting a close match go to wal mart and have them do a colour match on it, if your not looking for exact (and if it were me) I would strip all paint off and repaint it as I want it to look...but thats me...

I'll probably have to strip all the old green paint off (just to be sure new paint adheres properly). Not concerned about exact color match (off the shelf spray paint will get the job done). Just kicking myself that I messed up the paint to begin with in process of resurrecting this engine and created more work for myself. Live and learn…

I usually dont strip any paint...I primer over it..a light coat of primer does work for me... you can lightly sand off lettering before you prime...with emery cloth..gray primer makes the paint lighter...oxblood primer makes the paint darker...you can try it on an old boxcar and see what results you get before doing a prized piece...just a thought

I am guilty "fools rush in…" and that's why I'm in this repaint situation. I be sure to take the advice and test whatever paint I buy on a junker before using on final piece.
