Seeing the A-3's in the last LOW I got the camera and took some photos of an A-3 I have been working on. (thanks for the kick to get this finished) The jist of this project was to slow this loco down for switching duties. I replaced the idler gear with a reduction gear from a Mehano diesel truck. The gears had to be drilled to fit the idler shaft.
I removed some metal from the frame rails so the motor would sit further into the cab and some plastic was removed from the back of the cab floor for the motor to sit lower to line up the worm and the reduction gear.
I found a 22 tooth gear that fit the axle on the driver (VCR part) Some material had to be removed from the bottom cover and inside the chassis for gear clearance.

The motor is held in place with silicone.
This is as far as I have gotten. I plan to add metal wheels and wipers to the tender for better electrical pickup.

Nice work! Though the top valve guide in the last photo is bent...

Amazing job as always, Ray. I got off easy because I used the small low RPM can motor that was in small IHC steam like the old time 4-4-0's, the Mogul, etc. It runs nice and slow, but I'm sure not as steady as yours will with extra reduction. The axle gears on these were ridiculously small.
I used a brass Atlas worm for its larger diameter, so I didn't have to hog out the cab floor.
Be careful with those brake shoes... they're fragile.

You mean the crosshead guide? That's the proper shape, it has a taper to it by design.

Thanks Guyz. Nelson, Your's should run great with that motor and gearing. The original 14/1 gear ratio isn't really enough reduction but the low RPM motor should make up for that and be fine for normal operating conditions. Mine might be to slow to run on the main line with it's 30.46/1 ratio and can motor. I have another one I want to regear with a gear ratio somewhere in between the two. quote: Be careful with those brake shoes... they're fragile. I have 5 of these A3 locos and I think this is the only one with all the shoes intact.

Ray, Nice work, yet again! I too have 2 of them to repower and get going again...(one of 4 needs a drive shaft rebuild, and 2 need new motors.....
Sadly, customers come first so.....And I'm packed right in with before Christmas work....orders, you name it....So, mine will have to wait!
I agree as well, I don't think not a single one of these same locomotives I have, got ANY of the brake hangers.....(I replace mine with brass castings that I have, painted flat black!)
Edit: This just so happens to be, my 1500th posting!

Nice work again, Ray. Can you make a video of it so we can see the low gearing in action?

Thanks everyone. I would like to take some videos of some of these locos in action. I need to get a little more experience taking and uploading videos.
