Boy, this week is a tough choice for me, I picked up quite a few new additions to my HO fleet at the Richmond, VA Greenberg show on Saturday. This caboose is rather special, though, and was priced at $5, so I had to buy it, most times I see them they're way up there. A little piece of HO history, I guess.

Not sure that I'll ever use it, maybe I will, just a nice conversation piece. Made and sold by Roundhouse, Drover #9, might wind up behind something I pull. Who knows.

| Nice G&D pieces guys...his house still stands, having been repaired of the fire damage. The current owners, while not modelers themselves, understand its significance and have preserved what history they've found tucked away in the walls.

No micro, it's not faded, it is the appropriate color for the Frisco's beer boxcar fleet, which would be tan, or beige.

My first CotW in a while, is also a commemorative... and freshly painted from the STC East Frankfort Shops and a special crew :) But first, a little backstory... PULL UP A CHAIR, it's worth it. Especially in light of recent tragic events.
~~~~~~~
Many years ago during a very rough time in my life, while I was nonetheless presenting during a retreat, a teacher well-revered by my class and peers said I would make a good... teacher, and encouraged me to pursue it. I shrugged it off for a variety of reasons. I never have pursued it - I'm an idiot barely able to muddle his own way about, after all. But that comment stuck with me for some reason. And even back then, I thought if I *did* become a reasonably competent teacher not hated by his class, maybe it would be cool to have the kids sign a train car (instead of a paper or autograph book) each year....
Fast forward, oh, about 18 years, and one of the Girl Scout troops in my hometown is looking to start a FIRST Lego League Robot Team. My eldest daughter is a girl scout, and while she's age-ineligible for this FLL round, she's interested and I'd love for this to be around when she IS eligible in a year or so. But the "leaders" of this proposed team have gotten a very bad, disorganized, rushed, and extremely late start. They wanted to do a regional tournament on Dec 1. By Mid-October, they had yet to acquire the necessary materials, introduce the girls (from disparate local troops) to each other, or even hold a meeting. The challenges for FLL are issued in *August* (!!!) to be attempted by kids from 4th thru 8th grade. Some teams only go with the older kids (for obvious reasons).
And this "team" of girls from G4-7 had never even seen a robot, thought of how to program, and in some cases even played with Legos. And in 5 weeks supposed to learn all these fundamentals, AND successfully complete FLL challenges, AND devise a presentation / skit, AND....
...this was Bad News Bears with Lego.
But I let myself get roped in as one of 2 coaches, and the sole "token male" allowed to do anything with Girl Scouts, because they were desperate and needed someone with time and knowledge and blah blah.
Well. A rookie FLL team has a near insumountable task on good footing... let alone after blowing its own feet off and having only 5 weeks to find them. But nonetheless we had our first meeting the Sunday before Halloween, and for the whole month of November legos (and FLL, and skits, and presentations) ruled my life.
The Tournament on Dec 1 in Louisville had 45 teams registered. Only 12 trophies would be awarded. And... we got one! For the presentation. And whereas on Nov 27 we had yet to successully complete a single Robot Challenge Mission, by that not and a followup emergency meeting, it started to click into place. Well enough for us to have a solidly mid-pack competitive showing. From a team that had only come together in 5 weeks!
So I whipped up a commemorative car by painting a Tyco Soo Line HC in my team's adopted colors, then designing all the custom decals (color separated for ALPS) of the various team / organization / sponsor logos. A *LOT* of easter eggs regarding the team are hidden in the data, while the girls' names are on the other side.
And then, during our teams celebratory pizza party, I got them all to sign it... which they were all too very eager to do...
Yeah. Pretty special car :)
...not that I deserve sole or even most of the credit. But maybe that old teacher of mine was right...?
But I'm proud of these kids... there are some amazing kids out there once you give them a chance.
Sometimes it's not about the results, but about the challenge and participation. Like the Jamaican Bobsled team. or the Palestinian snow skiers. or the first ever Islamic woman allowed to compete in the Olympics. They may not win, place, show, or get out of last place, but they ARE participating. That's saying something. Congrats on getting them off the ground, and creeting a commemorative car to remember it by. You are special just by helping them attempt something they never would have on their own.
Absolutely. In fact that was my sole philosophy from the outset: I didn't want to sell them short or doubt themselves, but... "OK, let's be realistic: we may not "win" this time around, but we can try, and at least set some goals, so what CAN we do...?" I made sure they took the long view that if this year's Challenge proved out of reach, it would still be an incredible experience to lay the foundations for the 2013 edition, and a head-start on the offseason prep. And wow, did that ever pay off ;) It was pretty rewarding all around... I think maybe they taught me more than I did them, ha ha.
Way to go with the girls, GIC. That's the kind of experience you would never get in school.
I went into teaching with the kind of attitude you have. I still try to have it. But 10 years of mandatory state standardized testing and "data-driven, tested, and proven" instructional strategy(©) have all but burned me out. I promised myself I wouldn't editorialize on these boards anymore, so I'll stop there.
This is my COTW:
It is a Varney State of Maine Products car:
I buy them when I can as often as I can. I prefer the New Haven SoM cars, but they are rarer and more expensive, I paid ~$16 for a NH SoM car today!
Wow, I think I actually have one of those Varney SoM's. I know I have a metal one that looks of similar design at any rate... not sure it's Varney though. And I don't think it's a NH. Did Varney make both? Always thought the NH / State of Maine was a funny story.
B77 - my SIL, and many of Bethany's teachers, have similar comments. I can't say I'm a fan of the process, but I understand the teachers' hands are kind of tied. I should have homeschooled, but as you say... an argument better left for elsewhere....
Tony,
If it is metal, it should be Varney, although I do think there was a Marklin (Or Fleishcmann) version that was also metal. I do not collect those due to the over sized trucks/wheels.
Varney never made a New Haven letter SOMP car. They were only Bev-Bel I think. There may be some newer makes tht I am not familiar with as well. This is the one I purchased today:
Well time to add a Car of the week as I have the other "of the week" series on here.....Got a few to add!
These pictures, are of the SAME caboose, one is one side and the other, is the opposite side of the same car! Been looking for this model for awhile, thanks to a forum member for the trade.....
Then I also got:
A few CSX Safety Caboose's to add to my fleet of "safety" caboose's that I've been wanting, and finally got them...Again, from the same forum member in trade!
