Starting off with an "Electromotive" this week, a Boeing LRV trolley. Prone to problems, used only in San Francisco and Boston metro systems, it was a trouble-plagued unit, Boston actually hid theirs in underground tunnels and used some for parts to fix others until it was discovered, big embarrassment to the city government. Nice looking units overall, though. San Fran had trouble as their station platforms were higher than the entrances to the LRVs at some stations. Still, I like the looks of these electric units. I just got this one off Ebay this week, at shows they tend to sell high, 60 range, I got it for $35 with shipping. Made by AHM, guess they're hard to find. I've got two Boston versions in parts, and now I have a complete SF unit.

Man, I remember when these were first being tested. I was going to City College of San Francisco at the time and they were running them up and down the K line for months before they went into service. When they were finally in service, the doors would never close due to faulty door sensors or something. -Thomas

Yep, it was supposed to be BN's new colors, but were not adapted, nor repeated by the BN though. Fifteen SD45s numbered 516 thru 530 were ordered by the CB&Q in 1969 with this color scheme. They ordered nine U23Cs numbered 460 thru 468 from GE in April of that year that also had that color scheme as well. These were the only new locomotive purchases by the "Q" in its last year as an independent railroad.

My locomotive is one I got in 2008. IHC 4-6-2 SP Daylight. Recently cut out the coal load and built an oil bunker for it!

The owner of by dearly-departed "haunt" let me know of a stash of AHM / Rivarossi locos he'd acquired... all of which were in need of serious TLC. Among them were a Challenger, a Big Boy, a Cab Forward, a Berkshire, and one more. None of them ran... all were filthy... some were even rusted.
But Rivarossis are extremely well-designed... and while they can be a PITA to disassemble, in the end they were all salvageable, and ran like butter ;)
As payment for my services, I got to keep the USRA Articulated / Y6B. I had to rebuilt the pilot and dismantle the whole drivetrain to attach it (plasticweld the mounting boot).

Though the tender is mismatched for roadname, it is the correct type. I plan to keep the original weathering on the tender... in fact I almost wish I hadn't cleaned the loco. But wow is this thing fun to watch :)

Nice work Tony, like yours, mine is missing the feedwater heater cover over the nose...

The road number is correct for the N&W locomotive that beat the UP Bigboy as the most powerful engine when they added 14 tons of ballast to it.

My LOTW is out of scale, but it's one of the things I'm running right now. I got this in a Lionel Glacier Route set off ebay a while back for a good deal. I like GN and Alcos, so this is a favorite of mine despite its flaws:

This loco is an example of the low end of modern Lionel. It looks great, but it's got nothing under the hood. It's only got power in one truck, and it's a little can motor with two traction tires. The electronic horn sound is way too quiet. It barely pulls the three modern lightweight cars it came with, much less any postwar rolling stock. Despite its weakness, I like it enough to run it when I can. Besides...I'm trying to steer the girls away from Chessie to something I like. A goat's as cute as a cat, right?
The set came with a CW-80 that the previous owner had added in. Of course it died. So I added a sound activation button to my ZW to run the horn, then I found out today that my 1033 will run it. I'll have to look into that more.
One more thing: all the Lionel catalog photos, and the picture on the box show this running short hood forward. I don't know about anyone else, but I always run them long hood forward. I've read all the history and debate on the issue, but Lionel seems to be set in their ways.
By the way: Ben's got "dumpster cam", but this is FREEZER CAM!

My LOTW is a Custom Painted HO Scale New Haven NYNH&H PA1 Diesel Locomotive
Take your pick! LOL! The top left is a Hobbytown locomotive and I think the rest are Athearn. There may be 1-2 more Hobbytown hiding in there. There are approx 22 PA1 locomotives in this box.
I have at least two more on a shelf here at home. These are what I have in storage!

Picked up at a local show a few weeks ago. Was looking for a RS-3 body to eventually use for a kitbash down the road. So long as I found a total junker I was fine. I bought one last year and didn't have the heart to tear it apart because it still ran lol. This one was different. AHM RS-3 with a Tyco/Mantua fuel tank. No motor. No gears in the main truck (anyone have spares?) and its missing a wheel on the one side.

A perfect junker for my project! However as I took a real close look at it. I started to feel a bit bad. The big "L&N" logos are painted on the thing. And while it has a usual color scheme, I can't help but think that at one time this was the pride of someones fleet. That said I felt it was at least worthy to document the work put into this loco before it went off to the scrap yard.

Shay, I thought something was missing up top! But I kind of like the uncluttered look, as it highlights the unconventional, ovoid profile of the boiler and smokebox. Still, I imagine I should find a replacement part at some point.
Thanks for the tip on what roadnumber to use... I might have to do that. And then drag race it against my Big Boy :) First one to the converging switch OH THE HUMANITY!!!

LOL! Maybe I guess you are right. I believe sometimes it is not so bad to strut ones colors! If we were not here to look & gaze at what everyone else has, what fun would it be? Then again, i have no layout, so i don't get to run any of mine either! I am jealous of anyone with at least a connected loop! LOL!
In my teens, never had access to such ease of information and material. I guess that is part of the reason I like to share the images of what I have. It's like the Authenticast Crane I posted as my AOTW, I never knew one existed until ~4-5 years ago.

Hi Phillip!:
Been through New Haven once in my early 30's for work and that's it. Spent about 1 hour checking out some sights. I'm from Pittsburgh PA.
Back in 1984, when I was 14, I purchased a train set at a house auction. By the time we arrived, the trains had already been sold to someone. I saw it and reacted in disgust. My father promptly leaned over and gestured as he suggested I offer the person walking past me $20 for the set. Without hesitation, I did so and the person said yes. I do not remember anything else about the auction, because I spent the rest of it gazing at my very first train set. It was a (almost complete and perfect) Marx set. It was missing the flat car load and the engines looked identical to yours. As we were driving home, I began to take the pieces out of the insert and set them on the seat beside me. Strangely, after having all the pieces out, the box still felt heavy. I lifted the insert to find an additional nearly vintage set of Athearn "Snow Bird" New haven F7 A-B diesels.
That was a joyous day for me.
I ended up selling the Marx set to someone that had an ad placed in the back of a Model Railroader Magazine for $50. I described the set over the phone to the gent as best as I could and he made me the offer. I asked my Dad and he said take it. My first HO train sale.
Been collecting New Haven equipment ever since.
later!
Sean

Ben:
New Haven did have some pretty neat locomotives I would sure like to get. Three of which as far as I know have never been modeled and the only way to have one is to make it yourself:
"John Quincy Adams," EDER-7 FM P12-42 locomotive # 3100:

"DAN'L WEBSTER," EDER-6 BLH RP-210 locomotives # 3000 & 3001:

"Roger Williams," RDC cab unit # 140:

This was my first meager attempt to model my own using a FA unit nose, F7 cab roof and windshield and a Budd RDC1 diesel. I have since acquired drawings with dimensions and now know the Athearn Budd rail cars are ~9-10 feet too short and the standard streamlined passenger cars with the large Budd roof vents added make a better starting point than the Budd diesels do. The ends also more closely resemble the ends on the Roger Williams cars.

There is also a nice streamliner out there that I do not have and am not yet willing to pay for. The Comet:

I think the one I mentioned is the one that MBTA or some other commuter rail did up a newer loco in NH colors That odd they'd modify a RDC with a cab on it Comet I likes too Neat pics too I likes You should do what Chessie System did to a steam loco but with NH colors on it

Sean, those New Haven locos are wild... I never knew they had such prototypes. Nice bash too, especially for a first attempt. It would be fun to do an RDC with a C-Liner nose, since that EDER-7 FM definitely has C-Liner windshields.

Thanks! It was a real junker when I got it, so it was a long time in the making. Someone had squeezed the handrails, causing the stanchions to break through the walkways on both sides. There was a crack in the cab roof, and of course the decal on the front was mostly gone. I kept the original "Santa Fe" text on the sides of the long hood so that it would remain true to its origins, but re-worked everything else.

bkoch, Nice work! I wish I could get B&O items in shape that are workable.....once in a blue moon does that come along but its not easy as most companies don't seem to use a "standard" shade of B&O blue.......
Again, NICE work! What did you use for the handrailing?

Horizon Hobby is finally getting in the NS Heritage RTR Locomotives from Athearn. My order of two came into my LHS yesterday. They run as good as they look. No plans for DCC; although these have the Athearn quick plug. These are the Norfolk Western and PRR AC4400.

Thanks; they are a good-looking pair. The RTR versions are listed at retail of $129; my LHS gave me a little break on that, so yes, not exactly inexpensive. But then, 1/2 of the NS Heritage will be in the Spectrum line, with sound, so I know those will start to get pricey. John

Thanks EM-1!. Those are stock Tyco stanchions with music wire handrails, all painted to match. Colors were mixed using Testor's enamels, and a final topcoat of clear satin acrylic was sprayed over everything but the tampo-applied "Santa Fe" (had to preserve that original gloss!).

Many thanks Alco Fan! You're right, I have been away too long. I get wrapped up in these projects and I forget to check in regularly!
