That's a great match-up of the two, eaglerock109. The power torque 630's ride so high and have a lot of unnatural void space under the car body. I really like the looks of the Athearn fuel tank on your locomotive. I filled in the ends of the tank on my D&H 630 which helped to eliminate some of the "air" that you see underneath in a 3/4 view, but the whole thing still sits too high.

Nice work combining the two models!

My steamer is an old Mantua SP 4-6-2 #2486. Originally she was a 2001 Mantua pacific with a smoke unit, then her Sagami can motor blew out thus leaving her in operable. I removed everything off her original frame and i thought she'd never run again. Then a friend of mine donated his old mantua UP 4-6-2 from the 60s and being it was missing a cowcather I decided I'd use the frame off it and out it on my beloved SP 4-6-2. Took many new screws for the drawbar and wires and installing every part off #2486, tender, boiler, pilot beam, headlight etc. After 2 hours of work last week she fire up again! She may never be as silent as her old motor but at least this open pole motor will pull more and never burn out. Hooked up the tender wire to the frame so the tender light works I'm very happy to have my start Pacific back in action

Hi Justin, I'm not sure which Athearn chassis this actually is. I found it at a show and bought it for no real reason. I've looked at Athearns on ebay and think it's a U boat frame. I didn't like the trucks and switched them from an SD9. It was an old blue box loco so I had a newer Athear motor and swapped it in, added front and rear lights and DCC.

Bkock, I like the mods on both of your loco's.

Thanks Alco Fan! For the 630, I filled in the ends of the fuel tank with some standard Evergreen styrene sheet and rod. After that it had to be painted of course. I had already mixed some D&H gray for the handrail stanchions, so I decided to go with that color on the tank for a more prototypical look.

For the sharknose, I cut individual styrene windows from clear plastic sheet and adjusted the fit of each one with careful sanding. It was a lot of fidgety work, but the shell is so thick that it just wouldn't work as well to glue larger pieces to the inside. I glued them all in with Testors clear plastic cement. I made the marker light lenses by stretching clear styrene sprue to approximately the same diameter as the holes in the body shell, then I milled it to just the right size by turning it in a drill against some fine sandpaper. I sanded the end to convex lens shape, polished it, and then sliced off a thin section. I glued those on with the same Testors cement. Inside the shell, I glued some transparent red file folder tab material to give the lights color. It worked out nicely because when viewed from the side or when the headlight is off, the lenses appear clear. Head-on with the bulb lit they are red. I might go back at some point and add some reflectors inside as well to collect more of the light from the headlight bulb.

bkoch,
Very creative modeling while still maintaining the "Tyco Heritage" on the Shark and 630.
Did you "pamper", like you did on other Tycos, the paint on the shark too?
The Shark almost looks like an O scale model with your mods.

Ben,
I'm not even sure who made that, it doesn't look like an AHM, but then again it doesn't look like a Bowser or Cary either.....The underframe detail is to........intricate! But then again, it could be a collaboration of models......Something I'd do to get a specific prototype.....

Any one else have an answer to that one?

* That I thought at first look was a Silvine trolley. I see the drive through the window, and their trolley pole. But the Silvine roof walkways are missing. They are a part of the roof casting. When Tyco brought there trolley out they used a trolley body modified from the Silvines. With no roof walks. Also their's, Tyco's, was a cable car. So no trolley pole. They had the same 1 axel drive the same as Silvines, but where Silvines was made of cast metal , Tyco's was black plactic. Tyco later on made a 2 axel drive. This looks like it is made from parts from both. Silvine and tyco.

Not sure when I'll "gear up" to get this guy going, but it was part of my auction buys last Wednesday. Can't tell yet if all the pieces are there, but may be. These are just all the main pieces in the kit. So it's ALMOST a locomotive worth posting.

Hi Alco Fan. Actually I did very little to the shark. I cleaned up the yellow stripes on the nose so that they would be a uniform width, and on the truck frames I painted the area aorund the springs black to give them some more depth. Otherwise, it's all original.

It's like Christmas all over again for me here! Many years ago I got a very large train set from Santa. The locomotive was a D&H, which being a midwesterner I wasn't familiar with. I can't look at a D&H loco without thinking of that. Then you throw in Microbusss's BOTW, which was one of the buildings that came with the set, and it's like a blast from the past. I really miss my layout, and can't wait to build another.

I pick the shells up at the last Greenberg show. I finally got a new battery for my camera. I had the clear chassis for a long time.

I bought this Walthers Conrail SW-1 at the Merchant Sq Mall show for $5. I got it for that as it had no motor. So I called Walthers and by chance the guy in the parts dept. found a bag of original motors from when they were made in the mid-90's. So now it is back together and runs well.

Actually, an Athearn U30C chassis works very well with the TYCO Alco Super 630.

And here I thought we foamed over trains?

its a 1965 VW bug with a sunroof, we bought it in Santa Monica in 2009, last owner bought it, repainted it, drove very little, parked it, there it sat for 20 years in his backyard! We picked it up like I said in 09 and my dad wanted to paint it white, I said NO too boring of a color on a car! So we decided to make a Herbie. Took a year to do the rebuild the inside and out. We have buddies who have paint shops, upholstry, and parts shops. We put it all together. Being a self made mechanic/machinist comes in handy to our hobby! That's why I love repairing engines! Anyways in 2010 the motor blew up so we spent 3 months rebuilding it and now its been a flawless runner ever since! All we've done since the engine rebuild is replace transmission bushings, front 53 sticker, and the sunroof. I own a 72 yellow bug as my first car, we're gonna rebuild the engine and everything. Gonna be a lot of fun for a first car!!

Not sure when I'll "gear up" to get this guy going, but it was part of my auction buys last Wednesday. Can't tell yet if all the pieces are there, but may be. These are just all the main pieces in the kit. So it's ALMOST a locomotive worth posting.

Jerry I'd KILL to have just the tender of 3rd truck set up on this locomotive, to make a 4 truck Shay! (I got the same locomotive! Mine however, is not as assembled as yours is! I got along way to go!

Haha I own both of those engines, and my 4-4-2 won't run either. I was going to kitbash it into a different road's 4-4-2, but the metal chassis would make it a bear to convert to something else. I think the issue with mine is the motor has just got too weak over time. I either need to swap the magnets out or just get a can in there.

Chris that's very ironic! But I gotta say the last owner was dead on with makingthis 4-4-2 as historically accurate as possible!! SSW had Atlantics an they look just like this! He also got the number correct, SSW had a 4-4-2 #605!! what scares me about my 4-4-2 is the fact that it has a smoke unit.... I don't exactly feel comfortable trying it being how old the motor is but we'll see. The issue on mine is a short caused by an unsautered wire. Gonna resauter it today and fix the detail parts! I love this engine and reminder the owner also gave it it's own 5 coach matching train with auxiliary tender and a caboose!! Won it off eBay for only $50!!! And I think we all know it's worth twice that!

John, yea it would be a easy remotor. I did a mantua pacific awhile ago that would basically be the same thing.

Hyde, my issue is the orginal model is based off the ATSF 4-4-2. And their Atlantics looked nothing like anyone elses. Also I just remembered mine is missing most of its valve gear. I MIGHT be able to swap it with the valve gear off a IHC Pacific so we'll see. But I do like the overall look of the engine so I've been debating just using it for my personal road or something.

If you don't get around to it just sell me it But I still am sceptical about the smoke unit in my 4-4-2....But I can't get over how great the paint is on mine! I love the black valve gear and the black drivers. I hate it when people put the old roundhouse kits together and they don't paint anything cause then I'm the one that has to do all the painting! But couldn't be more happy with my 4-4-2 and matching 5 coach set!

Here's the only thing I've run lately. It's a Bachmann. I got him and his two passenger cars in a junk box at a show.

Fun shot for the week. Two loco's I did for my friend meet for the first time. Left is the Life-Like 0-4-0 Teakettle. Right is the Rivarossi 0-6-0 that was repainted last year in a fancy PRR theme.
