Nice little NMRA show in Danville, Indiana today, was quite packed shopper wise within 1 hour of the door opening. Prices were really good as well. Picked up a boxed Hallmark FM H12-44 switcher, a beater Tenshodo USRA 0-8-0 to rehab and a nice scratchbuilt old style grainery. Saw atleast 2 other brass engines I wanted that were priced to sell, but was out of spending $$ at that point. I plan to paint up the FM for my leasing company and keep it at the larger grainery for a yard goat. The 0-8-0 will belong to the preservation society and be kept in the roundhouse when not pulling fan trips. I would post up pics, but the stuffy nose this morning has blown into a full head cold and I feel like crap now. I spent enough time at the layout when I got home to make sure both engines run and that was it! Curled up on the couch now under a blanket on my laptop. Cheers Mike

Well, I am modeling the Susquehanna in the early 90's before the C430's got sidelined. So the only way you would see a steam loco is a preservation society. Gives me an excuse to have a steamer or two. Cant wait to start on getting it back in running shape. Mike

Mike, Good deal! I too run sort of a "Tourist" line as well, which is in the planning there of, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad that runs from Cumberland, MD, to Frostberg, MD so......I got the cars, and sections of the WM "Mountain Thunder #734......I want to fit everything of the locomotive to a Spectrum 2-8-0.......I've got good pictures of the locomotive, and all the cars, it will be the second "tourist" train, on my layout as I am sort of kinda (if that makes sense, building the Chessie Steam Special as well!) But, it wasn't really a tourist railroad at all!

Feeling much better today, meds and a good nights rest does wonders. Here are my finds at the show. The 0-8-0 is running and all back together. Missing the lead boiler weight so it doesnt pull that well yet. Gonna have to get some sticky weights to ballest it down. The home road on the tender is growing on me, looks native american and has the initials interwoven in the state shaped hearld. Its also well done and isnt gonna come off easily. I touched up the nicked up factory black paint and since the pic, I numbered her 890. The FM switcher has wheel wear, but the PO never hooked up the factory installed lights, so I soldered them up and lubricated the drive. The motor is a mini version of the normal KMT block motor, but with a factory installed single lead flywheel. Cheers Mike

Mike, That Fairbanks-Morse H10-44 or H12-44 is AWESOME! That look GREAT in B&O paint!
EDIT: The 0-8-0, looks like a Baldwin, is it? That actually be another good B&O 0-8-0 for a switcher......

Its an H12-44, Hallmark did one run in 1972. Its the only FM that Hallmark ever imported according to the Brown Book of Brass. Most FM's were Red Ball, Alco Models and OMI. I may trade off the GP18 in the yellow jacket colors, the 0-8-0 does better on my layout and looks great. The FM will stay to, I like funky diesels. Really want another 0-8-0. Might have to see if I can get those decals reproduced on the 0-8-0's tender. I figured out the name, it means "great white river" in Deleware Indian language. SO, translated, Wapihani Valley means Great White River Valley. I am part native american myself so I think its kind of neat. Need a paint scheme for the FM using that road name. The GP20 I am working on can be an exTPW yellow jacket. I was planning to make the FM of CNW heritage as those had the Prime Stratolite beacons on the cab roof. I would swap in a multi chime horn over the single chime. I laid in a siding into the new/old grain elevator. Mike

Its someone's fictional railroad, sure looks real with that nice custom logo, logo is the state of Indiana with stylized lettering in the middle. The 0-8-0 is a USRA prototype, I wanna say Tenshodo used the Alco version for thier prototype. Other than a bit slippery due to missing boiler weight, she runs really good and getting better with more use. I dont think she had been run in quite awhile when I bought her. Mike

Mike, In either case, both are AWESOME brass engines! I thought the 0-8-0 was a USRA but wasn't sure.....
As for the FM, the H10-44 and H12-44 look ALOT alike so, was difficult to tell which it was......
How does the FM run tho?
The 0-8-0 is custom lettered, naturally, and who ever printed those decals, knew what they were doing as the State of Indiana was well done!
I have a heavy Cary shell to an H10-44, on an Athearn SW-7 frame, and the thing will pull some cars for its size and heavy weighted shell.....I also have an S-2/4 from Cary thats on an Athearn SW-7 frame and it too, will pull really well! But the detail on that brass one supercede any of my switchers except the brass Box Cab, I just got!
I have a ALCO Models Brass 0-6-0 that is also light and want to add some boiler weight to it as it runs great, but is slippery and needs more weight over the drivers! So, I know the feeling, (I just want ot re-do the drive shaft work as someone that had it before me, used a spring fitted over the gear box shaft and the motor shaft and epoxied it to each, and I don't trust it....

The FM runs pretty good for an early brass diesel. Gear tower noise is less than my GP18. A can motor would really make it run good. The open frame has a factory flywheel on one end. I need to replace the rubber tubes with proper slip joint shafts to easy any bind in the curves. I used to have a later run Tenshodo 0-8-0 that ran really nice, so quiet one would have thought it had a can motor but it was just the factory motor. Mike
