About 2 weeks ago I brought out my dads old Tyco Spirit of 76 C430 for some run time on my test track and for some cleaning and lubing. For some reason, well I shouldn't say that I mean them dang PT units always give us headaches am I right?! Anyways it was not running well at all even with very clean wheels and a slightly oiled armature shaft. Eventually I got fed up with 2 days of fiddling with it trying to get it to work right so I finally said "I'm just gonna build a new front truck assembly for it." So I removed the gears off the old one being they were good and took a truck frame sitting on my storage rack, I have around 3 spare truck assemblies so I knew it wasn't going to be a big challenge. Anyways I moved all the parts to build the new truck to my Seybold Locomotive Works shop for assembly. It took about a week and a half to put it together, this "new" truck features new springs, new brushes, a new PT plate screw and a good thorough wheel cleaning. Look at the photo below of the badly worn out commutator brush!! I replaced both with 2 new ones that weren't used much at all off an older unit. Then I assembled it but it didn't work right, so I came here asked a few questions and all the friends I have here helped me figure that I had the PT cover plate on wrong! Flipped it to the correct side, adjusted one of the wires and boom! It was the best running PowerTorque I have! I'm very happy with how things turned out and who knows, I still have 2 other PT units operable I'm sure someday they will need a newer truck but I've got plenty of springs, brushes, and gears for when that day comes! Thanks to all who contributed advice and tips to this project!
here's right after the old truck was removed
all the parts moved to my new shop
gears installed!
wheel cover installed!
here you see the bad commutator brush on the left and the new one on the right
here's the PT plat eback on! Yes I know it was upside down but that is now corrected!
the finished product!!

Nice to hear it's running, Hyde. (Pun intended. ) I've never seen a PT brush that worn, so that unit has seen a lot of use. They can be kept going with enough maintenance.

If you'd like! I do repairs for friends or anyone who needs them. In my dads collection he had the old mantua version with the MU motor aka not PowerTorque and that one is an angel compared to the PT's I just have to give it new couplers which is a pain that an additional weight work but I got it running for the first time in 30 years last year! I've got plenty of springs and brushes to replace my small fleet or if anyone needs to have a new truck built.
