Hello! I spent this week building a new front truck PT assembly for my dads old Tyco Spirit of 76 C430. The old one was not working well at all and being I had 4 trucks lying around for parts it was simple to get another one! I installed new brushes, new springs, and cleaned the wheels. I screwed the cover plate back onto the truck and when the truck is snapped into the shell all it does is short when power's applied. Wheels are on correct sides, but when I don't have the truck snapped into the shell it runs! Kind of lost so anybody know whats wrong? Thanks!
here's what it looks like, wires all good, the truck bogey is off to the right
this is when it doesn't run.

Make sure the wiring isn't backwards. The fronts wheels only go one way and the rear wheel sets face the opposite way.

It looks to me like the brush plate is upside down.

Hyde, I can see one thing that should NEVER be done to a TYCO motor truck as you have......
The wires, should NOT be soldered directly over the end of the brush spring retainer as you have it, a slight twist on the wire from the movement of the other truck could REALLY pull enough to release pressure on the brush to keep contact to the armature.
Also make sure that the wire you soldered, isn't touching on the motor as I can't see clearly between the 2 brush retainer sections to make sure, BUT one of the wires thats soldered on the right, has the strands of the wire "spread" enough that one piece of the wire could be touching just the edge of the other brush spring retainer....
See picture:

The heavy black wire ought to be from the OTHER truck, Wire "A" on the picture. The much lighter gauge wire, should be going to the light, "B" on the picture, MAKE SURE they are not crossing ANYWHERE, as that will short it if the wire is bare ANYWHERE, and touching the other one!
As for this, make sure you have the front power truck with the metal wheels on the SAME side of the truck frame, and then the rear truck having BOTH metal wheels on the OPPOSITE side of the truck frame.
Ray, the brass/bronze plate is right as it can only mount one way on that plastic motor/brush cover that bolts onto the truck frame. I think its something crossing within the cab around the light bulb......OR something is spanning the wires we see soldered thats in a difficult place to see if its so, or not!

Ray is right... brush plate is upside down. Note the recess for the center wheel on top, and the grounded brush is always on the bottom.
And is that bulb wire soldered to the grounded brush terminal, or is it just tucked under it?

The brush plate being upside down shouldn't cause a short. It would however make the loco run the opposite direction after the short is located. Seeing how the wiring is oriented at the light would would help. If I were to guess, I would also say there is an issue at the light bulb.

Wo wo, hold up I never sautered any wires on this engine! This is how they were forever, never touched them, and dad never did, being they sat in boxes for 30 years none of us did. I did not replace the PT plate it was wired to the headlight and the wires go through the shell to the rear truck. I only gave it a new metal frame, springs and brushes, and cleaned the wheels. But I will flip the plate today and go from there.

Well the PT plate being upside down was the main issue! Now it just needs some tweaking before it's a good runner again! Thanks everyone!
see John, the PT plates have wires sautered directly onto the contact plates like on mine shown above. This one was off another old c430

And to answer all your questions it's simple. Both wires are sautered to their pick up plates. You can't see the one of the right because the wire is bent toward the camera and the black cover, blocks the view of the sautered wire
