Here is tonights addition to the stable. This will be the final addition for a bit as I need to pay down some bills now for awhile. She is an old Tenshodo NYC GP9 in its original box. Mike

She arrived in todays mail, I have her all torn down on the bench right now. The rubber tube from the motor to the one tower drive truck was hard as a rock, had to cut it off the shafts with my side cutter. All the old grease cleaned out, new grease added. I wanted to put the drive shaft coupler from an Athearn F unit in it, but I am missing the four pronged piece that goes on the worm shaft of the Athearn truck assembly. So I had to put a new rubber tube back in for now. Anybody got one of those four pronged drive shaft coupler pieces in thier junk box? Need to reglue 1 headlight lense and renumber 2 numberboards. The original paint is really nice. From the looks of the box, I think this is a first run model, box is narrower and has no markings of "Tenshodo" on it. Even the engine lacks the usual enamaled brass Tenshodo plates on it. Gears on the tower drive are encased in the truck casting, instead of exposed like later models I have owned/worked on. Once I upgrade to 8 wheel power pickup, she will run really nice, smooth now with just a bit of stutter when crossing over plastic turnout frogs, and this is with 4 wheel pickup and the original open frame motor. hi mike according to the catalogue,gp7`s come without the dynamic brake and gp9`s do,which according to them yours is a gp7,but as we all know the only real difference is the motor, ken http://www.hoseeker.net/tenshodo/tenshodocatalog3rdedpg09.jpg

Exactly as the real ones could come either way, with or without dynamic brake. NYC had them both ways. She runs better long hood lead, and with the extensive wheel wear, I am geussing most of her run time was in that direction. I do notice she surges as she runs, signs of a weak motor magnet. I have a gold case Athearn motor or a different open frame. Have to see how healthy that other open frame is. If it surges to, then I will yank this Athearn motor out of the junker its in and use it. Oh its all wheel powered, there is a drive shaft between the trucks thru the fuel tank area. All of the Tenshodos are driven this way. There was a CB&Q last week on fleabay. Right now there is just a GN GP7. They come and go, dont go over 100 bucks for one with its original box. The WP is the hardest to find, quite rare as very few were made in that paint scheme, although its one of the most striking. The CNW, CB&Q and UP's show up quite regularly as Tenshodo sold quite a few of them. The hard part is finding ones with really nice original paint jobs. This is an unpainted one on ebay right now as well, so you could paint it for whatever you wanted. The SD9's are also nice runners, espicaly with a gold case Athearn motor with flywheels in them. I found the Athearn part I was hunting, in a bin it didnt belong in! Replacing that rubber tube from the motor to the gear tower with some sort of dog bone or other shaft coupling that has a slip joint to it, really helps these models by removing any extra thrust action from the gear tower and motor bearings and removing any binding when the truck enters a curve. The Athearn F7 style drive shaft coupler just transmits rotational power to the gear box without any front to back thrust forces. This allows my original open frame motor to run much more smoothly. Your motor looks smaller than mine Ken. I thought Tenshodo aways used the larger open frame motor in the diesels. Mike
