The owner of the LHS brought back an old Alco Models brass Alco DL600(RSD7) that wouldnt run from the Wheaton IL show last week. I didnt know the back story at the time. With a hour and a half's labor I got the old girl running again. Quite a nice model of C&O's "Dragon Lady" high hood snoot nosed Alco RSD7. In speaking with the shop owner this afternoon, I found out the model was for sale and wouldnt run at the show, thus spoiling a potential sale. The owner, a friend of the shops weathering painter, had lost his job and was having to move to a very small appartment and was sell a bunch of his brass models. He was going to be into the model for about $50 of labor to get it running again. I really liked the model and even had a pair of E&P Associates replacement Samhongsa trucks to get rid of the spur gear(coffer grinder) trucks in my box of stuff. I made a call to the painter and had the gentleman give me a call. I found out what he wanted for the model, $130, offered him $100 and no charge for the repair, to which he agreed. I felt better, and he made some needed money. He has quite a few more models for sale including 3 Key Brass C&O 2-6-6-6's a Virginian jack shaft electric and others. He is going to get me a list next month when he goes to the show and can pass it on to the LHS owner. I will post up some pics tomorrow, its in pieces on my bench. I plan to paint it in its as delivered C&O for progress colors and give it to my wife for Christmas. She loves C&O/Chessie and has several locos and cars she runs on my layout. While I am planning a NYC layout, I could really get into a single track C&O branch line serving a couple of coal mine tipples. She has pushed me to do a C&O/Chessie layout for awhile. Might have to consider that! Cheers Mike

I am considering, since the layout is just bare benchwork and the track just laid out without any fastening down yet, a single track branch line serving a couple of coal mine tipples. I am going to get pics tomorrow of the bench work as it is now. Pretty simple, 24" deep, around the walls, almost totaly square other than a 45'ish angled duck under to clear the door opening into the room. For buildings I have a nicely built old Suydam 3 stall round house and a Suydam black bart mine tipple. Coal country modeling comes kind of naturaly as the club I was a member of for many years is totaly based on the old Clinchfield with strong influences of C&O and WM. When we make our weekly trip to the hobby shops in Indy, I will order C&O blue in a rattle can unless someone knows of a color that matches you can get at Hobby Lobby ect. I get my N&W blue there but its to light for C&O. The striping should be fun to put on it as well. I plan to do the as delivered C&O for progress with the full striping, yellow pilots and frame stripe. Need to swap out the old open frame motor next, I got the better trucks installed. Pics of all that tomorrow. Mike

cadet,
Sounds like you have a good idea of what your gonna do with the layout. I can't wait to see what you have on it!

As for C&O paint. Testors my friend!

Go get the Testors "Model Masters" Blue Angle Blue paint (not sure of the paint number) its a match....

THEN, you can use Testors Sea Blue #1172.....sprayed through an airbrush, is a dead B&O/C&O Chessie and CSX blue! Which, is cheaper then the Model Master paint and much cheaper then the Floquil stuff (I normally use) BUT, I'm finding I like Floquil much better......BUT, the Testors small quarter ounce bottle, will make about 3 times as much so. 3/4 ounce when thinned for airbrushing.

On your C&O model, what you need to do alot of taping for? Yellow decal stripes are MUCH easier and look better when completed!

Pics of engine coming later today, I dont use oil based thru my air brush, but I can work magic with a spray can. I use acrylic in my air brush, but doesnt always work as well on brass. Prefer oil based so I can bake it. I normaly prime the brass with a grey primer if lighter colors wil be used, I do plan to use decal striping for the hood and frame, but I will have to spray the pilot faces as they were yellow. Mike

Ok, here are 3 pics of the new engine. One of her with the shell back on the frame, one of the power chassis, still with open frame motor but new trucks installed, and one of the original coffee grinder truck without the side frames. Check out the layout decision thread for layout pics. Mike

I have the original tri mount trucks, but they dont have any side frames. Those got reused on the new style drive trucks. PSC used to offer tri mount side frames for alcos in brass, not sure if they still do. I would sell the original trucks if you could use them. Here is a pic of what you would be getting, 2 of these:

Once the engine is officaly paid for, yes I would as I have no need for them, whatcha got to offer, shoot me a PM. I also have a pair of EMD trucks from an early Alco models GP40 but one needs a new spur gear from NWSL. Axle gears are good on all of them. The axles gears in the tri mounts are metal. Mike
