I seen a Bachmann Plus 2-8-0 relitavley cheap ($40 w/box). Are these any better than the pre-Spectrum 2-8-0's? I know Bachmann of the 90's and back had a bad case of cracking and shrinking gears.

Justin, it's the best version of that Reading I-10 that they made. It has a decent can motor, but it's not as nice as current Spectrum. It's a good price if it's in really good condition.

If it runs good with box then sure $40 sounds good. My newly aquired 2-8-2 cracked 2 drive axles. Replaced both but it still needs a LOT of fiddling before it's running again.

Justin, Yep $40 is a good price on the Bachmann Plus 2-8-0 pre-Spectrum units. As menmtioned should have a can motor not the pancake motor.... and have a decant set up with that for gearing.

Hyde,
Your 2-8-2 is NOT a "Plus" model! The Bachmann 2-8-2 was NEVER offered as a Bachmann Plus model is was discontinued off the Bachmann line of items before the Plus line even evolved.....You got the one that had all sorts of issues with the pancake motor sandwiched between the sides of the frame halves.

Your model came in a white and brownish tan box, where the plus models would have been in a gray box, with Bachmann Plus written in what looked like gold leaf across the top of the box.

I didn't say it was. I thought when first arrived it might've been but new that it wasn't because it didn't say anything. Anyways, it's not entirely different.

Hyde,
The running gear, or well drive train is alot different.....The unit you have is all geared in-line. The Plus series 2-8-0, has a can motor, with worm gear in a shirt shaft to it. so is is alot different inside. The exterior is all the same with a mere extra axle added under the firebox. The boiler shell is exactly the same. And the 3 out of the 4 drivers are the same the driver with the gear on it is slightly different!
