how possible it is to take an old broken (no longer used and duplicated boxcar) and convert it to a yard office of sorts, what type of yard off im not sure yet but I am open to ideas and thoughts on how to do this/start it, keep in mind I have a limited budget so I plan to do this on a budget build type build...

Revell did it years ago. Maybe use some ideas from those kits?

Jim, I'd actually use an old un-runable Caboose for this!
The Box car would require a man door in place of the big freight doors and stuff, it just be easier....and thats what the real railroads used to do!
BUT, really, just remove the trucks from the underside and maybe even the frame, and put it flat against the ground where it will set, and your done add a light and some window glass and it look GREAT.....
IF you want to get fancy, get some plastic sheet make a foundation to go under it and then paint it like concrete gray, OR take a few short and I do mean short trestle bents from say a life like trestle kit and add them under it to raise it about a 1/4 inch off the ground........as alot of times they weren't right on the ground, per se.....

Many have tried to, and failed, ya just can't repair stupid...

I've seen these in a 1:1 setting - on a unused side rail, have 1 or two - add a sode porch with steps and railings - open the sliding door and put in a normal door. On each side, toward the ends, cut some square holes and put in windows. For an office environment, a air conditioner/heating system mounted on the top would be nice. If the car is to be used for storage, then all that is needed is the porch/loading ramp.
When you get it finished, show us some pics.
Cheers Bill

| Storage sounds nice, the noose can work as the office, as I have too many of them anyways, should I still paint the storage car a grey color? If yes would "Gunship grey" work or would that be too dark? As for the office would the same grey be ok or again would that be too dark?

What's funny is i took one of those old revell yard office cabooses and custom built a frame for it! Haven't touched it in a year but it rolls and has couplers! Just needs new steps which I have. I took the platform of the office, cut a piece of track and made a mini mounted display! A bunch of stuff has sat on it over the years. 2 0-6-0Ts and 2 cabooses! I don't think it'll be on my new layout so i'll probably get rid of it.

would you mind sending it my way if you don't plan ti reuse it so I may use the detail parts like the sign and lights and things like that. and build mine from that? (or if you got really good pics of it too that should be a start for me).
One thing I wish I could find is interior details for cabooses...

as for your earlier comment, what ever parts you no longer need on your yard office/custom caboose that you are going to get rid of, or pictures of the yard office you have/caboose to model after.
im thinking one or two window air units for the caboose, altho I plan to make it semi perminant if possible IE its still used on the rails but mainly as an office nothing more, same for the storage boxcar

Rock Island, believe it or not, used old 40' boxcars for depots! The body sat on the ground, have both sliding doors plated over, and had a shed like roof the sloped to the side. Had simple doors and window! I'll see if I can;t scan a picture! RR's have used old coaches for storage in this matter and even diner's have used old dated RR stuff!

Just cut your holes for the door and window (if you want a window)...file them "square"... find a door and window from a old bldg kit or use Grandnt Line parts...put a couple of vents and a smokejack (from a caboose) on top...paint it...weather it...you're done...add a elec meter and an a/c unit if you really wannna get fancy...you can put the a/c unit in WITHOUT cutting another window.
