This is an MDC Roundhouse kit that I picked up at (yet another) flea market meet last year.
(there is a pattern here, right?).
It was a combination metal base + plastic tank kit that required a bit more work than usual.
Filed the burrs off the metal base, gray primered and flat black painted it, then Dullcoted.
The weight was a bit under NMRA, so I put some odd pieces of lead fishing weights in the tank before sealing the ends. The wheels were left as original- plastic w/ metal axles, but the axles were painted black. I will rarely use this one on the layout, so I gave it some spare Mchenry couplers I had and called it a day. In the future, I could see doing some weathering and using it as a photo prop...

I would have posted it in COTW, but I built it.

Ron,
This may be off topic here, but see the frame that is under that tanker?

Well those "frames" needless to say are log cars! I am looking to get as many of those as I can to go to the log trains I'm working on...... So, in that sense and having said it..... I'm drooling!

That's a cool kit, Ron. I like the Fox trucks. Was the brake chain included?

Ron,
With the added decalling, is that a Pennsy RR use only tanker for like fuel?

I have to agree with Nelson tho..... Its a GREAT kit, and the extra brake chain is AWESOME.....

And I too like the Fox trucks, I just wished I had some of those from Central Valley! (I have a few cars I'd like to add them too!)

I don't know enough about early 20th cen. Oil transport, but there was an extensive researched article in MR within the last 2-3 years that discussed tank cars and their development.

EM-1 John: I noticed the logging car resemblance. Perhaps there is a relationship between the manufacture of the early tank cars and the logging cars????

Is there enough to tie Pauline to the tracks?

yeah the early tank cars did have a frame Till that one guy called Gramps invented a frameless tank car Which he used extensively on the D&RGW narrow gauge out of Antonio,NM to haul his oil out
Thats the origin of those tank cars with GRAMPS on them

That I am old enough to understand the reference (Perils of Pauline- silent movies before "The Jazz Singer" with Al Jolson) is bad enough, don't you think, Nels? I don't recall who played Pauline, Mary Pickford?

But that would be my DAD'S memories, not mine per se.

Can't get a break....

Ron, without using Google, I think it was Mary Pickford. That was more like my grandparent's era, but I was always aware of The Perils of Pauline, and may have even seen some in school.

I don't see how it dates someone, necessarily. The young 'uns have info at their fingertips we could only dream of, so no excuses.

I think it was a "kitbash, that MDC Roundhouse wanted to try for something different, BUT then again the log car frame, makes for a good tank support, with the log "chucks" on the end of the load beams!

The St Louis Museum of Transportation has an elevated tank car, made by Union Tank Car, in it's collection, but the solid beam below the walkway and on which the model's tank rests is not there. Instead, a more strongly braced truck assembly supports each end of the tank. However, the notes do mention a stiffener plate being used instead of a beam. I recall a photo of an old time tank car in my Internet searches last week, so it maybe based on prototype. Apparently, the advent of more modern welding technology enabled the tanks to be made strong enough to be positioned closer to the rails, and from there, in the early 1920s, tank cars grew increasingly uniform in construction and on until we get to the large ones today.
Maybe a kit bash, more likely a derivative from real world designs.

As far as being an old man trapped in a young mans body, as I still have all my hair ( not colored, wise guys!) at 58, I feel like an old man trapped in a middle aged mans body!

You're as young as you feel, until you get out of bed the next morning and face reality!
