I have always wondered this, how is Bachmann on there lifetime warranty? I have 3 shot N scale engines I wanna send off. Anybody ever dealt with the warranty department?

Redneck, there is a catch with the warranty. They don't guarantee you'll get your EXACT engines back, they may replace them with "similar" ones. If you have a rare or desired model like a J4, they may send you something compatible but not exact. I've heard this before (with HO engine warranty replacements) , so if you "just" want replacement engines, that's fine, if you want EXACTLY what you have now back, you may get a nasty surprise. And no recourse. Be forewarned! Send them off at your own risk, as you may never see those exact engines ever again !

I have had some experience with getting N scale locos replaced. If the loco you are sending back is still in production, they will replace it with another of the same type. But if it is out of production you will get a substitute as Jerry stated. Of course you will have to pay the exchange fee if your item is over a year past the purchase date. I recommend either sending an email or call and explain what you have and see what they will replace it with. I had 2 DD40s with broken gears and got 2 8-40cw locos in exchange, and got to keep the DD40s because of the sentimental value I had for them. I think at the time the exchange fee was $10 per locomotive.

All 3 are still production, just greatly improved! 1 DD40, J-Class 4-8-4 and USRA 0-6-0.

I would send them an email, The service charge is now $15 for standard locos and $25 for Spectrum and DCC locos. Not a bad price for a new locomotive actually. http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/service.php

Yeah they rarely repair which i get on a standard line engine but on a spectrum, come on?! I sent them my UP 4-8-2 and they gave me a 2-10-2 instead, i enjoyed the 4-8-2 more.

I believe a warranty on an HO train is about as useless as a band-Aid on Cancer...

My problem is a I have a Bachmann Plus J4,I really like the J4 model itself, so I don't really want it replaced with something else. Which is why I hesitate to send it in for repair. The gears are sheared inside, and the side rods are flopping around ( bought it as a "needs work" locomotive ). I guess I could call and ask about the possibility of getting the same model back, if not the same unit. But I doubt that would happen. I'm just thinking of using it for a static model.
