Well guys, I thought I'd post some of my "open" loaded flat cars and gondolas......
As I know a few of you out there enjoy what I'm up to as far as loads go anyway!

This car above, is a MDC Roundhouse 30 foot car, loaded with a "Holt" crawler. With a crate of parts to go with it. This was the company of "Caterpillar" before it was known as "Cat" as the company was owned by the Holt family.

The car above was made from an Athearn 40 foot flat car, the bulkheads are custom made to be replica's of the home built ones the B&O had......The load is of REAL Aluminum pipe, and the whole load is added to the car, just like the real one would have been!

The car above is made from an Athearn 4 truck flat car, the load was the first one I EVER done way back when its been loaded like this for something like 18 years I think! Anyway, yes, that IS real copper pipe! Its not a look alike as alot would guess, and with that it makes the car REALLY heavy!
I have more of these cars to load, but not with the same thing, as alot of times I change the "speical" loads to be a one car type thing and then other times I make multiples to add interest, to look like a regular shipment, from anyone revenue company that each railroad I model may serve.
This is just the B&O collection, more to come!

Now, for some CSX custom loaded cars:

The above car was custom painted, in CSX "Rebel" paint, and then was loaded with treated telephone poles. The "poles" were custom turned on my lathe......EVERY one of them! (Yes this car is loaded prototypical, as the real thing would have been, so there is alot of "poles" in that gondola!

The above car, was built from a Walthers Bulkhead GSC flat car, and then custom loaded with Gas line pipe! The pipe, is made from cut straws, and the crates were made from blocks of wood, and then all was chained down and have "dunnage" for the load spacers. The load here was added after the car, was custom painted in CSX!

This car, was a BEAST! It was a kit from McKean Models, however thats NOT the worse part...... loading it was! It has over 300 pieces in this car to make the load as you see it! Plus alot of glue and clamping time as each "stack" was clamped for the glue to dry. And then all the "dunnage" was added as each bundle was added and then the bundles of sheet stock, was banded, with yellow electrical tape cut to 4 scale inches, wide!
Sadly, (I hate to think of it) no I don't, but I have one more of these to make! Only the next one, is in TTX paint, not CSX! however the next one, has 900 pieces on it!

not bad on the wood hauler But the companies that do send wood by rail WRAP each bundle with thier names on the sides
Here are NYC (ex-Conrail) gondolas that rolled thru last week on BNSF's Valley Sub A block or 2 from my house! hehe
& just to prove they are ex-Corails
 Neat yes?

Nice Ben! Neat, damn right it is! Thing is, that pipe has to be some light to be loaded that high on the car! I wonder if thats composite pipe used for bury purposes for underground wire.....
VERY interesting!

Ben, Something I forgot to mention in my last posting, I had seen the wood "Centerbeam" cars with unwraped loads, of sheet goods that was what looked to be boat building. So, on that CSX car, I didn't go that route as the next car, won't be either.
I have the means of making more of these loads, and would like to find a few (at least 2) more of the centerbeam flat cars to add in the wraped type loads on the next 2.
Sadly, tho, when I seen those cars with unwraped bundles, I didn't have my camera on me so, I lost out on it, (the other thing is, they weren't CSX cars I seen like that) ....they were yellow TTX cars so......

And again:

Then you have:

Notice that the Chessie System car, has "WM" reporting marks. the car number is of the same series for the fully Western Maryland cars?
I did this purposely, as the original TYCO cars inspired some freelanced modeling and the idea looks GREAT!

John,
Do you have a team of Lilliputians for chaining down those loads?

Nelson, too funny! I tell ya, once you do one or 2 cars, with the chains, it gets easy pretty quick which needless to say the old adage goes "practice makes perfect" let me tell ya, its true.....
The CSX bulkhead flat with the green gas pipe on it, it took me about 15 minutes to add all that chain!

Wow! Those loads look great! Especially that McKean centerbeam.... I've built two of the oval versions, and they are NOT fun. But I always thought the holes were a fascinating trait when I was a kid, and the brandings / logos on the beam are cool too, so that's my excuse for not loading them ;)
Love the Chessie tyco car. Would look great in the green MOW scheme too!

All handsome cars and loads John. I especially like what you did to the Tyco flats, very clever.

Tony, THANKS! I will admit those McKean center beams were NOT fun! I had them in kits as you know, and as you see, the red CSX is built, finished, with a load, I have one other one thats yellow TTX, the car is built, and partially loaded. As its getting a different type of wood load. The CSX seen here has 300 pieces of wood on it........ The TTX one will have 900 pieces of wood on it..... monotonous, you betcha! Thats why its not completed yet!
The Chessie flat car, in green? HMMMMM that would have the bright yellow lettering and MW on it instead of WM.........question, I'll have to figure out what type of car it be for MOW service.....Be a GREAT "wheel car"! Which if you watch the video of my B&O MOW going through Cumberland, MD that I've posted, you'll see the car I'm talking about! As I have made one from these same TYCO flat cars!
I have to get pictures of that car too!
Alco Fan, Thanks! As you can see, alot of work and planning went into these....More to come tho, as I am one to like open loaded cars forthis very reason, and they look good too!

That looks awesome, EM. They look so realistic.
