An early NYC GP20, possibly 1962-'64, with the same road numbers on the cab as the early CN F9s, pictured in the '64 catalog. This has not been renumbered by a modeler and also has zebra stripes where other examples have solid white pilots. I can't remember seeing one like this.

While on a telephone conference at work last week, I jumped on ebay and came across this engine. The Seller was asking for 50 dollars. Having this engine already I immediately recognized that it was an Athearn Genesis Mike. You usually don't find them this cheap anywhere so naturally I was a bit concerned that there was something wrong. To add to the mystery, I noticed a few holes were drilled into the tender. I didn't want to miss out on the unit so I took a gamble and bought it. The seller shipped it quickly and it arrived on Friday. I opened her up and all seemed well. I tried powering her up in DC and she would not go. I decided to try it on DCC and as soon as i powered the test track, I hear a sweet sound coming form the Loco. Not only is this unit DCC, it is a sweet running Sound Unit. Needless to say, this was a major score. A Genesis Mike with Sound and DCC for 50 bucks!!!

My loco this week is a Life Like BL-2. I purchased this on a trip to Washington D.C. in 1989, so about 23 years ago. I took a side trip to the B&O museum which has this very engine in their collection, and so I bought it as a souvenir of the trip.
Since then it's languished in a display case, but last week I decided to make it road worthy by replacing the cracked axle bearings with Athearn substitutes, installing warm white LEDs, and installing an NCE D13SRJ decoder. It is now a smooth runner and a fine addition to the layout.

These are a pair of GP20s I have. The ICG unit should have Power Torque trucks but had the MU2 dummy trucks to match the IC powered unit.

Well my project of the week is my first engine i ever owned! Purchased in 1993 by my mother for my brother, being i wasnt born till 96, it was part of a some what rare Zenith Limited Set! I still have everything from that set except the box but it doesnt matter. Suprisingly it's lasted nearly 20 years and going through 3 different layouts! I've done a lot of modifications to it over the years, but by 2011 it was missing its handrails, number boards, pilot wheel assembly. and part of her yoke bar. In 2012 I gave her a new pilot wheel assembly, new handrails and found one of her number boards! So she's starting to come back to complete, but I always wanted to make her into an SP m4 Mogul, like the one on display near my house, SP #1629 (except without white walls). i aquired a roundhouse vanderbilt tender in 2011 then painted later that year, presently she is torn down for a major overhaul with her running gear, everything is stripped, but i do plan to repaint the boiler and footboards, and rebuild the mechanical aspects, hopefully before my new layout project starts and consumes all my time.

I buy, repair, and collect http://scvr.weebly.com/ http://seyboldlocomotiveworks.weebly.com/ http://www.youtube.com/user/TheDeputation?feature=watch Hyde.

My LOTW is ready to make a brew run, all it needs are beer cars. I don't think I have many, maybe some Varney ones. Anyway, found it at the local Greenberg show today, $10, Model Power unit.

Here is my LOTW:
My very first actual TYCO contribution. It is an Alco Century C430 diesel locomotive in McGinnis New Haven paint & numbered 4301
Just purchased on eBay for approx $17 inc s/h. I think it is the only one I have. ... maybe... I do not remember. Probably not actually now that I think about it... Put it this way.. it is the only one in my collection that I have seen in a few years... If I in fact have another one.

Thomas, Yep it will be in hump service.... absolutely! I custom made the slug to be powered, BUT, I'm thinking of derating it to a dummy as it doesn't nearly as well as the BL-2 does so......IF I do derate the slug, it will remain to have working lights!
But yes, the slug, currently is powered.
Ken, Thanks for clearing that, it looked like brass, but its difficult to tell with the Proto-2000 units, and the fact that the detail parts that can be put on the Proto units, make them look like the brass ones! NICE tho.... flywheel drive?

Well a couple more for this one.......
First up, My Western Maryland "M-2" Challenger.....

In action, on my old club layout that I totally built and designed!
And then one for Hyde, (if your watching).....

For Hyde's COTW posting of the CSX "MOW" Pumpkin paint he posted, I've got the engine for the set, not to mention, I also have a second unit to get completed, here you see a GP38-2, and the one thats not completed is a B23-7! Minor details need to be added to the B23-7 so......In due time, I'll have a set of CSX "MOW" motive power!

Hi,
I got this one today in the mail, unluckly seems the travel in the box was not easy and the weight got loose and cracked the hood into pieces. I glued it together (not pretty) but after that I discovered that the powered truck has the gears and the wheels splitted
I think is a GP38, but not sure if its Tyco. The motor is an old open frame, looks like the Mantua steamers. Has a beautiful paint scheme, I guess it will end its days as decoration...

And this was my first post in LOTW
Thanks!

LittleJoe, The DT&I 1776 is a Life-Like model. Just like that orange CSX I have pictured above. This company has been bought out by Walthers, but is still making these locomotives as their "Train Set" locomotive along with a few others as well.
Hyde, Thats to funny an orange CSX STEAMER? Say is isn't so!

Hey John & Nelson! This is my WM Class M2 Challenger:
It is all brass, true O scale and completely scratch built. Other than the drivers, not a single part is cast. Every part is hand or machine tooled. I believe it was made by Herbert Walters who used to work behind the counter of Ma Websters Hobby Store in NYC back in the 1940's-60's.

I can only wish the WM Challenger I have would EVER look that good Sean! Mine was built from a Rivarossi base loco, I did mine when I was about 10 or 11 years old......
Not the same work I do today, but its pretty damn good for the age I was. I have this locomotive torn down right now for a rebuilding, as I want alittle more replication involved to it to make it more closely resemble this one you posted Sean.......
Then again, there's always brass HO right?

Nelson, For now, this is about the best I can do for a "cloe-up" of the WM M-2 Challenger.....

Sadly tho, its not the greatest picture as the digital camera I took that picture with was like a 4 megapixel camera way back when......I currently have this beast torn down for re-detailing, and such as I have the proper cab, and am machining out a proper or close to a proper boiler front as this locomotive was built when I was young, runs GREAT for a 1972 Rivarossi Challenger. It was a Union Pacific model (I can't even remember the road number original to the model but it got a Berkshire type tender from Rivarossi as well and I sold the original centipede tender that came with it. But at that age when I done it, I didn't know of the detail parts I know of today! So, it will get a complete face lift, so to speak, HOPEFULLY, I can remove the domes on the boiler and replace them with something either machined to spec, OR find ones close to what it calls for by the spec sheets I have for it as it resembled the B&O's own EM-1 boiler, just shorter......I have a total of 3 of these to build! Which are all going to be done art the same time!

quote:Hey John & Nelson!

Sean, Any chance you can shoot a picture of your WM Challenger of the top of the boiler? I need to see how the domes look from a "looking down" from above to get the general idea of their shape.......As I'll be making a mold of the domes once I have a single "master copy" for this very reason.......

John, This is the flickr photo set I have dedicated to it:

I took a snip-it if one of the closer side shots and concentrated on the domes here:

Sorry, but that is the best I can do for now. It is safely packed away in storage until I have some place to display it.
@ Nelson: I decided to end it because it needed a serious revamping anyway. I believe it has to have been made by mr Walters. I would like to find someone else who owns some of his stuff. I might relist it with that intent. I am not sure. I wish I live in NY so I could visit the NYSME library and facility to do more research on him.

Sean, THANKS that helps alot..... I'm comparing the diagrams I have with the model you have so that when I get around to it, I can merely go on to machine out a master copy to make for the 3 I have to build of the M-2's, as that will be 6 of them!
VERY appreciated!

C1, They should bolt on from under the frame if I'm not mistaken in the far rear corners and I believe just behind the pilot.
