The Alco in front arrived yesterday, it has no road number on the cab and the hood logo is in a different position than other examples I've seen.

The Alco in the back was custom painted on an old shell using pictures as the only reference,

I'm gonna go for more N gauge this week.

THis week's LOTW for me is this LifeLike E7 unit, bought from a local club member selling off an N gauge estate. I really like the big E units now, and hadn't seen this one before going through his trays of N gauge. Will have to try it out soon.

Custom painted Conway Scenic GP9. My first custom paint scheme. I used masking tape and spray paint. Obviously not the best choices. This paint scheme is entirely made up but utilizes the Conway Scenic colors.

This is my last Conway Scenic unit for a while. I have 3 more on the way, but that won't be for a while.

Check out my railroad drawings I have for sale!

Ray,
The B&O has the newest Spectrum frame that has a small single motor with flywheels, unlike the older one's. Which runs pretty good!

The 2 Western Marylands, is the older frame that has the 2 micro motors that has one built into each truck. They run well with shorter trains (4 or 5 cars), but nothing like the B&O with the newer frame under it that did come DCC equipt. and will pull decently on about 10 cars.

Good deal. I was actually looking at the DCC model so its good to hear its a good puller. Zebra Stripes are quickly becoming my favorite Santa Fe Era locos. Already have the GP-9 and FM baby in Zebra.

Ray,
You know, come to think of it, I think I have one in Zebra stripes that I have slated to be painted in B&O as number 19, to have the 2 of them the B&O had as I do the Western Maryland......

I'll have to look as I think I also have one thats painted in Pennsy as well!

I've always been fond of the old yard diesels as their body line alot of times are much different, and the little 44 tonner is just cute........I seen the first one I ever seen is the B&O I have, the hobby shop that was in my home town had it and it had a broken truck side frame mount and the owner gave it to me as a gift since he couldn't sell it and I was always around and thats the same place, I got a custom and repairs counter in so.......I took the shell off and added it to a new frame and then awhile later I got a Western Maryland shell that needed a frame, which is the older one with dual mini motors built into the trucks.....

Then recently, I got the 3rd Western Maryland one that has the yellow handrailing, step ends, that was a sell I just could not pass up for $5.00 at a yard sale!

Ray, did you see what became of that C44-9W Athearn I traded you? I'll have to post pictures of that one!

Hey John,

No i didn't see it and am very curios to see what you did with it. From what you described, it sounded like a great project. I sure would like to see the finished product.

Though I have been asked to slim down on my collection, I am going to a train swap meet this weekend to see what I find. I really don't need more projects but can't resist. Hopefully the girlfriend doesn't wonder where I am at at 7 am in the morning. Better take the gym clothes with me.

Hey John. I am from Massachusetts. As a kid my family would vacation at North Conway. Best week of the whole year! And we would always go to the Conway Scenic. As far as I can remember, I have always loved trains and loved that railroad. I live about 2 hours from the Conway Scenic.

LOL! glad to see that I am not alone in all of this. In fact, I am taking my 15 year old nephew with me. Being the jock and all, I never would have guessed he would get into trains but I once caught him at my house running a gp-20 back and forth on a flex track he powered up. He is now into trains as is my 5 year old nephew. I will tell him to bring his workout clothes as well.

Here's the newest to the fleet, given to me by Mr. Jude during the last flea market "because I'm sure a scout like you would have something better to do with these". I originally wanted them for parts, but after realizing that these are of a custom road, I think I'm going to get a different set of locomotives to use for parts.

Both are Powered F7 A's, Hi-F rubber band drives by Athearns, and appear to have been well liked as 104 has some grab irons and a windsheild. Both have identical motors (second production) and have the same internal modification for a universal join (green tubing). I've got to get drive belts, horns, part of a pilot for 104, matching paint for some minor scratches, and windshields.

I know rubber band drive doesn't usually run great, but in tandem I'm confident they'll be good enough.

Harrison,
I wouldn't bother with the Hi-Fi drive those shells by Athearn would snap right onto a newer Athearn blue box F-7A or F-7B powered frame! AND they aren't difficult to find either, Ebay has them alot and for half decent prices!

Then either one, separately, would be GREAT runners, and pullers for you.....

Islander, to replace the rubber shaft couplings, use small silicone fuel line tubing, which is available at RC oriented hobby shops. For bands, look for the large clear Goody hair bands available at Walmart. They last forever, unlike the original bands which are more trouble than they're worth. They usually come in a pack of three sizes, and the smaller ones make great traction tires.

I'll second Nelson's advice of using the silicone fuel line tubing and Goody hair bands.
I have even used can motors in some of my Athearn Hi-F locomotives.
They are real smooth at low speed and quiet.

Here's my NH RDC with the same motor and clear bands. I put these in back in '09, and they haven't failed yet.

Really nice paint, creative. I've never done pin stripping like that before, great.
