That was a great deal. I really like the NYC Hudson locomotives. The drivers and rods on your loco look to be in great condition. Really nice details and it's got the valve gear.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

hi NC shortlines, just shows what lengths a collector will go to,to get something he needs, the particular Chevy is rare it was a spare i had from the mantua set,so we both got a great deal, yes the tenshodos were great for their drives, only the motors that let them down, open frame, but this ones going to be re motored, ken

Ken, I realize that, but some people will shell out thousands of dollars for a piece of toast. I'm not interested in collector's value. I'm just comparing the more tangible value of relative skill and craftsmanship involved, and there isn't any comparison. That's a pretty crude looking Bel Air, IMO. You definitely got the better end of that deal.

| gg1-guy, I only starting buying these, firstly because I can get good deals, and secondly I cannot get a good supply of other old locos,on ebay usa brass can be very cheap, and its got great detail, but i still like to revert back to basic locos like tyco to detail and have fun with,if you enjoy what you have, keep having fun its far more important, ken

Ya left us hanging old chap, how about some pics of her all fixed up and new decals? I am very envious of that old hudson. My very first brass, before I knew what brass was, was a Tenshodo NYC hudson. As a young teen I was a huge and I mean huge NYC fan. Was at one of the larger national chain shows, Great American Train Show to be exact, held every year at the state fair grounds in Indianapolis, Indiana. Was in my full NYC garb, my J3 Hudson T shirt and NYC ball cap. It was me and my dad, walking around. I hadn't found much, a caboose and a couple of buildings when a gentleman walked up to us while we at cheese burgers at the food court and handed me a box that said Tenshodo NYC Hudson on it, silver, 2 seperate boxes one for engine and one for the tender. Told us he had been trying to sell it and none of the dealers wanted to give him anything for it as they didnt wanna mess with brass. He had no children to give it to and seen me in my NYC outfit and said it was mine if I wanted it. Talk about making my day, no making my year! I took her home, she didnt wanna run well at first but I was well versed in dealing with my Mantua 2-8-2, so I took it appart, new lube, new model airplane fuel line to connect motor to gear box, and a good wheel cleaning on both engine and tender and away she went. I ran the wheels of that engine till cars, girls and helping at a friends farm took my attention away as a late teen and well in to my 20's. She fell victim to me getting deep into postwar Lionel in my late 20's when I came back to trains. Seeing your progress makes me really want to find another one and fix her up and keep her till I gone. Hope she turned out nice, last pics looked great so far. Those old Tenshodos might not been the most detailed, but for what they lacked in detail, they were mechanicly bulletproof and pulled well. Just typing this is bringing back a flood of memories of my early years in HO scale. I missed most of the Japanese brass era, born in 1973, will be 40 next year. But I had loads of Tyco, Mantua, Athearn super power F units custom done by LHS in NYC lightning strip and matching heavyweight 20th century train. I split pulling duties with the F's or the Hudson. Although with the full consist I had to bank the Hudson up the grade with the 2 F7a units in front of the Hudson. Cheers Mike P.S. Thank you for the trip down memory lane, it was fun although my pocketbook might not like it in the future!
Still NT's, I have Aspergers.

Ken, is there a certain brand of decals you want? Champ, Hearld King, Microscale? We have a very well stocked old school hobby shop near here, Hawkins Rail in Lafayette, IN. He might have what you need, probably does as he bought up loads of decals before many of these companies when out of business. I would be glad to post you a set if he has them. He does do mail order, dont see why he wouldnt send them direct, but if he wont post to the UK, I would. Let me know as I will probably be there in the next 2 weeks. Or give him a call, open 12noon till 5pm eastern std time in the USA. I am guessing that the Champ or Hearld King set would be the closest to the original decals. I am not sure who provided them to Tenshodo. Just a standard set for NYC steam is needed. Mike

I will check with Jack over at Hawkins Rail this week and get back to you. He most likely has them. I checked in my decal pile and all I have are caboose decals for NYC. I also may need a set as I am working on getting myself one of these that will need the decaling redone. I also find it helps the paint stick, if you bake these in the oven at 180' for 45 min to an hour. I bake all my brass unless it has parts that have been super glued (acc glue) back on. A Champ set would be perfect, I think that is what Tenshodo used back in the day. I just did some waterslide decals on my Petter AC1 diesel that I am putting in my garden tractor, got them from a friend in the UK! Mike P.S. I think my original Hudson had the optional Box pok style drivers instead of the spoked ones that yours has.

Ken, that's a pretty hefty looking open frame. As long as the magnet's still strong, she must have some torque.
