I was looking through the '69-'70 Tyco catalog on page 5 and noticed that not only did they use and Athearn auto loader decaled and painted for TT but these auto loaders had six cars from Athearn some of which have been shortened to fit. The Athearn loader only comes with four cars and they take up most of the space. Tyco lists six cars and since using Athearn autos the rear of the cars had to be shortened and the front ends are a normal length.
Check out the link and see what it looks like to you.

I can't say how I've ever seen one of these, wonder if it's just a marketing photo, then they came up with their own? Do any really exist like this?

I think these where a "stand-in" for what they hoped to produce. I think the shortened cars

would be a surprise most people who have ever looked at this catalog.

I'd say since most people don't have every available year catalog, I know I don't, and probably haven't looked through more than 10% of what's available, it'd be easy to miss this unique photo. Most of my catalogs are from a later period, so I doubt I've ever seen or noticed this photo before. Neat, though! thanks for posting it.

Busss,
Yes the decals are a giveaway. Athearn made the auto loaders seen in the picture and they also made the Caddys. I'm guessing the orange auto loaders that the Tyco Fans are familiar with were not ready.

I think all the Tyco/Mantua catalogs are available on HOSeeker.net. I only have a few but I have the one I'm using as a reference, the '69-70. It would be very easy to miss these shortened cars.

Since I got interested in this subject here is the first red box auto loader I can remember seeing. I thought they were only brown box releases and the cars are '70s and can be seen in the '70-'71 catalog. Maybe they did come out in '69-'70 but weren't ready for the catalog.
Any help?

The 69-70 timeframe and catalog is correct; the 50' flat was not introduced until 67/68, with the other adaptive cars (coil, bulkhead, piggyback) soon following. The cars are 1968 Chevy Camaros and AMC AMX's.

Brown boxes were not introduced until May 1971. So the first couple years of Autoloaders would have been in red boxes. Notice how your box has the stock information printed on a sticker, instead of on the box. The box was for a piggyback, originally... they applied the stickers over the printed text for the initial runs, until boxes with the Autoloader stock info were ready.

What's interesting is that the Autoloader never did get an "art box" like the other contemporary "accessory cars" (piggyback, log dump, ore dump, unloading boxcar) - all introduced at the same time - received.

The very first few releases had this rare variant:

Note the "Autoloader" logo is missing, and the "Trailer Train" text is the same as the flat car's (normal releases used larger text).

In fact, I'd say the one in your box is a later 70's release, since the Frisco and TT logos are shrunk way down. The early releases had the much larger logos as shown above... with the typical "Autoloader - Trailer Train" banner across the top.

Thanks Spiderj,
You really know your stuff.
I'm going to check the ones on my layout to see if two of the three could be red boxers. I have one that is still in the small brown box. The example I've shown boxed is one from an auction. I will be putting a red boxed example on my watch list.
My memory is fading. I used to know instantly that the Camaros were '68s. I had several '68 autos and so did my family members.
I'm going to figure that the box never came with the art work because there was no way to display the contents as in the Piggyback Flatcar set with the terminal vans and tractor. The cars or the loader would need to be covered to use the same size box. It looks like the Auto Loader and the Piggyback Flatcar set use the same size box on comparison. I would really have liked to have seen the art work for the Auto Loader, maybe they had it done and decided not to use it for the reason I mention?

Here's an old picture of an actual Auto Loader that may have been converted by the NYC originally.
