Recently received Tyco 4-6-2. Did not run as indicated prior to purchase.
Worm gear front drive to helical drive gear looks OK.
Rear tender supplies power? but very light and does not hold track.
Sure this has been discussed before but any advise is welcomed as I am newcomer (but old) to this type of engine design.
Thanks

When you're looking at the rear of the tender, make sure the brass wheels are on the left. The combination of brass, steel and zinc makes for high resistance...those truck sideframes get real hot. You can bypass this with extra pickup made with a couple of extra wipers from an old TYCO searchlight car or similar...

I did my Pacific the same way...

Thanks for quick response. Have one searchlight car and see wipers to axle shaft. Will have to get another car to try your fix.
Still question very light weight on tender?

Hate to be "that guy" by a 4-6-2 is a pacific not a prairie, prairies are 2-6-2s Also the tender weighting should be fine as is, for one of my shifters I put a couple thin weights off old tenders for more weight. The old 4-6-2s should be fine for weighting but my new mantua classics 4-6-2 has a lighter tender which is normal.

Be sure to POLISH ANY and all of these connections as well:
>Between truck and frame, where the bolt is placed. >Where wire from locomotive comes out of the back and is >bolted to tender frame, >POLISH EVEN the wire "eye" as well.
This will ensure you to have good electrical contact with the frame to ground all these electrical joints so that the motor gets ample power.
If tender is too light, add alittle weight NEAR not over the trucks, DO NOT cover the trucks mounting bolt hole in the frame, as if it should get hot, the heat will make the adhesive from the weight mounting run into the bolt threads and not allow electrical connection between moving parts.
They make 1/4 ounce add on weight with 2 sided tape for this, 1/4 ounce should be plenty near each truck.

The first set of wipers were for my 2-6-2 Prairie, the second set for my 4-6-2 Pacific. In all cases, I add weight to the tender using a 3 oz egg sinker mounted with epoxy putty...

The extra holes in the floor of this Pacific's tender are for the wires that go to the new wipers...
