I don't get around to reading as often as I should, but one book I recently finished was Gary Krist's "The White Cascade".

The book tells the story of the 1910 Wellington avalanche that wiped out two Great Northern trains on Steven's Pass in western Washington. Though tragic and even a bit gruesome, the story is very well told. It is not just a documentary. Krist has done his research, and, in essence, takes you on trip back in time, allowing you to live through one of the greatest and most tragic railway disasters in the Paciifc Northwest. Some of the people who were involved in that wreck are buried a block away from my house, and it was incredible to "meet" these almost forgotten people from a time when a winding switchback line was the only the route the mighty Great Northern had to Seattle.

I have yet to read "Vis Major", which is Martin Burwash's account of the same event. However, I've heard that it is also very good.

Here's the links to both books: http://www.amazon.com/The-White-Cascade-Deadliest-Avalanche/dp/0805083294/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338869974&sr=8-1
