Yes, it is a Mantua. My train buddy owns one. It's not a Santa Fe prototype. I just gotta ask him that magic number, THE PRICE!

Looks like the roof has the dreaded "zincpest".

Hi John,

It is a Mantua 8-Ball 2-6-0. It was produced between the mid to late 1940's through the 1950's. Yours appears to me a later 1950's model. The 1940's and prewar model has a brass chassis.

Yours also seems to have some zimax rot to the cab roof...and maybe the beginnings on the steam chest.

Here is one of mine:

This is the box cover to show how they were intended to be built:

You can get replacement roofs from Dan Bush at Yardbirdtrains, provided he has any in stock.

Otherwise! Great model! I have a thing for those little Mantua locos, as can be seen in my parts stash below!

Thanks guys! I also have what looks to be a brass 4-4-0 as well, that I haven't got pictures of it yet as I just got him as well.......

Actually I take that back, I've got 2 brass 4-4-0's both tho, in some really sad shape! BUT, what I paid for the box, was well.........WELL worth it with everything else inside!

PLUS, I couldn't for the life of me, help myself!!!!!!

If this is the 4-4-0, then it is the Mantua Belle of the 80's:
