I have been looking for the skid flat car in GN with the pipe load (3 red "pipes") from the red box era. Easy to find the car (w/o break wheel unfortunately) but not the load. I am pretty new at this but is this a hard to find item? Thanks (as always). rich p

I don't think they were particularly rare when new, but to find one intact today is a bear and I'm amazed that one went so cheap. It's not even worth the time to post an item on eBay that's going to go for under $10.
I think the GN version is a transition car because the version with three short pieces of grey pipe is immensely more common - even the one with three tractors on it is more common, and I have no problem getting $8-$10 for them at shows without a box. And the red pipes are more common on either the black (Southern) or yellow (Rock Island I think) flat car.

The Great Northern flat car with red pipes can also be found in some of the 1963 Grocery Store Sets. There are also three uncataloged flat cars with red pipes, Rich Foods, Steward Products and Frankford Quaker Oats.Edited by - waw47 on April 18 2012 3:17:44 PM

The early cars have full data, which the one in the picture seems to lack. AFAIK the full data version only came with the red pipes. By the time the gray pipes were introduced, the decor had been cheapened. The later ones with filled steps are a dime a dozen. The earlier ones are tougher to find.

Thanks for the info guys - I thought the red pipe load was hard to find. I'll keep looking on ebay. I am trying to recreate my first set and this is by far the hardest one to find. rich p
