I see one of these on eBay this week. Just how rare are they? I don't think I've ever seen one before; the Model Railroader 25th from 1959 turns up fairly regularly (I've had several) but not these. Red 40' box with white name on the left and band on the right, print is a tad fuzzy.

They are pretty rare. Tony L. aka Spiderj has one or two. He has almost everything Tyco. I do believe the car is a bluebox era.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see this car: http://www.ebay.com/itm/400283812358?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 on that linked page.
The car is from 1965, so that's red box era, unless it was sold as Mantua only.

Redbox era still had both Tyco and Mantua branding, and the differences weren't always clear. You could have Tyco in both RTR and kit form, but Mantuas were only kits.
The stock# is 311-Z. Same as the MR car from a few years prior; Tyco re-used "311-Z" a few times. I have it in the original box but I can't recall which it is, though I'm leaning towards "kit". FWIW, the MR car was available as both a kit in red box, and RTR in the blue. The blue boxes were not labeled.
This car is a bit scarcer than the MR one. But I see them a handful of times per year. The MR car probably outnumbers it about 10:1.

Note the car's reporting mark/serial number "TRX 1027." 1027 was the street address for Kalmbach publishing back in 1965. David P. Morgan the long-time editor of Trains often made reference to the address as it related to similarly numbered locomotives, cars, etc.

Thanks for the background on the road number. I've noted in the past that Tyco's reporting marks often bear subtle clues and intent, especially on the fantasy billboard stuff, but it's nice to have a solid link too.
