While going through my graveyard, I found a project of mine that's a Athearn SW-7 Calf. Gears are no good so its side lined. I also my found my Varney SW-7/NW-2 that needs a motor. I had a wicked idea, take that Varney shell and modify that same frame to fit the Varney shell! The tabs on the frame side's will have to grinded aways and the coupler boxes cut off. Now,..... How can I mount this shell? The paint and all is too pristine to repaint or have silly looking mounting system. Any ideas? The frame hasn't engough meat for a screw like a 2-56. Maybe a 00-80 or something?

I have a couple of different Cary shells designed for Athearn switcher frames. On the sw1500 there are a couple of loose pieces that are slotted to fit the Athearn frame tab; these pieces are fastened to the shell with screws. On the H 10-44 one files off the frame tabs and drills holes in the Athearn frame to align with mounting lugs cast into the shell.
Some old plastic F7 shells have plastic lugs to which the motor units are fastened with screws.
So what you need are "mounting lugs" on your shell.
I'm thinking (old school) about epoxy plumbing repair putty and "standoffs" ( like a long hex nut) threaded for 2-56 and holes drilled through the Athearn frame. Or maybe just a small dab of epoxy putty set and drilled for a screw.
Hopefully someone with practical experience will come to our rescue!
