I tackled the first of two GG1's today that I'm rebuilding. The motor was torn apart, cleaned, and then reassembled and then the majority of the wire was replaced. It's running fine now except the directional lights are coming on in the wrong direction. I've seen a few Tyco engines that others have rebuilt that run backwards. Is this something to do with the brushes?

Yup... reverse the wires to the bulbs. You must have hooked them up backwards so the diodes light the one opposite the direction of travel.

I found that taking a few photos of what I am preparing to take apart may later come in handy...

I'll re-check the wires. I had the second GG1 in front of me to use as a reference for wiring, but I guess I messed something up

Frank: I've seen some Tyco engines that others have rebuilt that run backwards. For example, if they're put on the track with another engine, the two run in opposite directions. I'll be able to check on Sunday if this engine is backwards.

Cheez, because the same brush is always grounded to the truck block, the only way a PT could run the opposite direction of other locos is if the magnets were removed and put in backwards. If you didn't do that, it's just the bulb wires.

I forgot I took a picture of the motor block on my phone. The block is one of the later models with the more square shape. It looks like I put the plastic side plate on upside-down. Would this be causing my issue?

Yes, because the wires are soldered to the brush contacts, if you reverse them, you have turned the polarity 180 out. Sounds like your problem there. :)

Yup! That was the problem . I rotated the side plate and the engine works perfectly now. Thanks for all the help. I don't think I've ever taken a PT this far apart before. I definitely learned a good amount
