Guys,
I didn't see a place for Bowser so.....I'll post it here.

Bowser purchased Arbour Models in I think it was 1980....So, being gone for quite some time I bring you my Arbour Models C&O H-8.....

I thought you all might enjoy seeing some of my work, due to the lack of posting any pictures on my part, specially steam! (I actually perfer steam to diesel, BUT alot of times, I'm using mixed media on them, even tho, I do use a ton of brass detail parts on diecat and even plastic steamer models!

Yep, guilty as charged! BUT, when I get a chance to detail a brass locomotive, I pretty much jump right in, both feet, (Or in this case, both hands!)

Without any further adue, here's the progress on my Arbour Models, C&O H-8, 2-6-6-6......

The tender:

Notice "holes" in tender truck side frames! I did this to ALL 4 of them, but only have the picture online of thats seen here, right now! More pictures to come to show more progress! 8)

Well thats the tender posted.....Now for the boiler, and cab of the locomotive!

The Cab:

Boiler with cab in place:

Boiler front, removed (was put into place when I bought the model!)

More pictures to come when I get a chance, as its got alot more assembled since these were snaped!

ENJOY!

~John

As promissed in an earlier posting, heres some more progress pictures of this AMAZING model!

So then......The following picture is a close up of the tender trucks! Notice how all the "holes" were drilled out and then shaped, to that of the real castings!

A shot of the tender, overall!

This concludes the tender for now......next posting will be of the locomotive itself! :D

Then here we go again!

Notice again, that the holes were also drilled out of the trailing truck that was to support the entire firebox!

On this side of the locomotive, you will see that the first and last drivers, have been plated! YES, thats real Silver plating, over a PLASTIC driver.....This will enhance the electrical system of the locomotive!

Heres the front engine! Notice that this one has most of the valve gear, complete, and only 3 rods of it are missing! INTENSE work, to say the very least!

Other side of the locomotive. Again, you'll not see the "Silver" plating here......As the drivers, sadly are plastic, where black unpainted, now, primered!

More to come!

Some more.....The front of the boiler, and pilot.....

Head on:

3/4 view of the front, and boiler front. Notice, the boiler front is NOT original.......I thought the brass counter part detail, looked MUCH better then the factory original!

Opposite side, same angle:

ENJOY! 8)

And last but not least.....Some oddball shots that I just "threw" in!

Overall Locomotive, WITH tender:

I'll leave it at this for now, more to come as I have a chance to make some more progress on this kit! ALL you C&O fanatics, ENJOY! :D

Absolutely AWESOME John!

Can't wait to see the progress! I too like to use the brass details on my steam locomotives, (which I prefer as well). I do admit, I try to avoid the plastic models though. I have details out the wahzoo too! Still buying more every chance i get too!

Nice to finally see it, John. Someone else posted photos of one they were building a few years ago; maybe it was here. I know they're tough kits to build, so my hat's off to you.

Guys........Something I didn't even mention in any one of the above postings.... I got that locomotive BRAND NEW NEVER out of the box, or opened for a trade, of a Rivarossi GG-1!

NOW I'll tell ya, all the holes in the trucks, all the gearing, all works PREFECTLY as it sits! I still have some rod work to do as far as valve gear goes and I think the rear set of engines need to have most of the valve gear added......

YES, a difficult kit? YOU BET! NOTHING is soldered I might add, the metal used was Antimony Alloy, which states in the directions that each part to be soldered has to be 450 degrees, and the melting point is 501 degress! I don't like a 51 degree fudge factor........so I epoxied the entire thing as seen in the pictures......60 second epoxy I might add, which leaves about 25 to 30 seconds working time, and to pat myself on the back, It looks really good for speed and precision work with little time to work it!

I've also melted REAL lead into the lower boiler, as that boiler splits at the boiler ganyway......like a Rivarossi model does. It went as is, (what you see in the pictures from 1.3 pounds on my digital scale to 2.2 pounds with the added in melted lead weight)

Ought to pull me house!

Ben, there's been a lot of heated argument about that issue, but the best source I've seen said a Big Boy had higher starting HP and could drag an Allegheny from a standing start, but an Allegheny had more HP at its optimal running speed. In the end, they were pretty evenly matched. C&O never really used the Alegheny to its full potential anyway since they used them on slow coal drags.

Ben,
The Alleghany's boiler was able to produce 7,000 BOILER HP, where as the Big boys 6,100 BOILER HP......

Thing is, the tractive effort of the Big Boy was more then that of the Alleghany.....The B&O's EM-1 "Yellowstone" had more tractive power then the Alleghany! BUT with the high boiler HP of the Alleghany, it could sustain a train at speed longer, without running out of boiler presure! Unlike both the B&O's Yellowstone, AND the UP's Big Boy......
