There are four variations of the Penn Central #4301 Alco Small Number White #4301 Large Number White #4301 Large Number Orange #4301 Large Number #5628

Personally, for my purposes, I don't count the road# font styles as variations in their own right. They are, however, very handy for trying to date a particular piece as the fonts generally changed every couple years, and were usually not re-used. By font alone, the ho-hum red Santa Fe 430 must have a dozen variants.
But the different road numbers, and different colors, count in my book. Not to say I'm the authority... but one could go nuts chasing every font style on every roadname...

I need to check but I think Ihave a PC 4301 cab number with 5628 number boards. Found it. I believe that they, Tyco, used whatever numbers they had enough of at the time. The green is different also.
